@Mrs. Lion: I am very interested in hearing what people have to say! I'm not sure I'll teach forever...

@Mrs. Lion: Yes, yes yes. I'm exhausted! However, I'm not sure what I would do! I always think, what do teachers do when they don't teach anymore? My latest idea yesterday was to become a college application consultant (help kids with essays etc).

Actually, I teach part time at the local college and a private school. So to me that is perfect but I have a computer science degree.

Is there the possibility to be like a reading or math specialist or tutor?

You could always do home-based instruction through your local school district (kids who have long term illnesses or issues that prevent them from coming to school on a regular basis)...usually it's just a couple of times a week for 2 hours or so. Or you could look for part time teaching jobs? They aren't *super* common, but they exist--we have 2 part time teachers at our school. There just weren't the funds or student population for those to be full time positions.

Outside of teaching, you can potentially work for your local teacher training center, or adult education places, or Adult ESL places. Those would typically only be a few hours a week.

There are also textbook companies and places like Scholastic to research.

@Mamaof2: that's a good option because you can accept jobs only on days you want---like say, only Tuesdays. Or only Mondays and Wednesdays.

I'm a social worker in OBGYN and infectious disease. I work 3-4 days a week, and I work with HIV positive pregnant women, and newly diagnosed people with HIV. I love it but I don't want to do it forever. It's super flexible though

@Mrs. Lion: I am teaching coding at the middle school and next year will be adding a AP computer science class. I'm helping with the stem curriculum k-12. And just picked up hours working in the database.

Then at the college I do programming and information system classes.

My sister was a reading specialist before she had kids. That was more flexible and during regular hours.

I started my own business. I took my experience in grant writing for non-profits and small businesses (which wasn't exactly my passion) and set up my own shop. I can charge a decent rate and it all goes to me because I don't have to pay a boss. I do work at home because I can but I have meetings out and about pretty often. I do have to do work on nights and weekends but having a sitter 12-13 hours a week is enough for right now.

If I were you I would become some kind of consultant. Freelancing is so empowering for mamas because of the flexibility and the $ you can make when you work for yourself. Could you do curriculum development? Training consulting? Tutoring? Lecturing?

To get this whole idea going I was really inspired by Penelope Trunk's freelancing class and basically a lot of her writings on her website.

Also - I should add that I know the department of education does a lot of grants and I'm sure organizations, schools, businesses look for teachers who can help them write strong applications. Just a thought.

I am not a parent (yet), but as a 2nd job I work part-time at the public library. They are flexible with their hours, and a lot of the people that work there are mothers with young children. Your teaching background could be advantageous when it comes to designing children's programs.

@bushelandapeck: I work 30 hours as a clinical social worker as well. 30 hours for me is the sweet spot in that it is still considered full time for employment and benefit purposes, but gives me a day at home every week to get stuff done then hang out with LO. So I am in the office M-Th 8:30-4:30. I do pay for full time childcare still. I am working at the same agency I have been at for 4 years and was able to negotiate my way into part time by making myself valuable. With two incomes now (DH just finished school but still has a crazy schedule) it is worth it for me to work less and have a better work/family balance.

@Boheme: i was going to say the same thing but was trying to reply fast. I love the flexibility of this job and the diversity of things you can do. Your job sounds awesome and pretty intense.

I'm an engineer and after I had my son, I went down to 4 days a week I love it!

My son goes to daycare at an inhome 3 days a week, we do grandmacare on Mondays.

I would love to work part time, but at this point, I'm working for my health and retirement benefits. If I went down to part time I'd lose those, or have to pay back my whole salary to get them.

I am a part time WAHM so not WOHM, but I work part-time as a marketing consultant. My hours vary but I have childcare M-Th, though it is only 4-6 hours depending on the day.

I work 30 hrs per week as a physician, currently at an urgent care for the flexibility. Right now we have grandparents visiting helping with childcare but we're hiring a nanny to cover things when they leave next month. I work really odd hours that aren't predictable so it came out to be our only option. Definitely don't recommend going back to school to be an MDS if you just want part time work though! This is working great but I had my LO after I finished residency. I would have spent up to 80 hrs per week away from her during training.

I'm a licensed psychologist and wohm pt - two days, 3pm-7pm, two days, 9am-3pm, and one day 9am-6pm. We have a nanny, but will be enrolling her in a pt prek program in a couple of months. Once she's in Kindergarten, I'll drop one of my three nights and work more during the day. I feel that I have the perfect balance with a job I love, plus plenty of time with my LO at home! Like pp said, it took many years of school to get here, but it's definitely been worth it!
