I am thinking of starting a tradition where DDs can pick out 1 ornament each every Christmas. Anyone do this? Where do you go?

Yes!
Such a great tradition, we do this with DD too (she's four now)
We pick one as a family and she picks one too!
we go to different places (Walmart, Disney Store, Hallmark etc)

Yes! We do this with DD. For now they have all been hallmark. Hallmark ornaments are great because they are dated, so easy to remember when it's from. I would love if they are always hallmark but it's more important to me for her to love it as she gets older. So we'll see.
She already got her ornament for this year. She picked a Daniel Tiger one. It's perfect! She is obsessed and her birthday party is Daniel themed.

We have been picking for our son the past 3 years, but this year I will ask him to pick! I love doing it, my MIL did it for DH and he has all these cute ornaments that we now have.

My parents did this for us growing up and my husband and I have been doing it with our kids. Mostly we've been picking for them (they're 4.5 and 20m), but we'll probably let the 4.5yo pick his this year. We also usually get a family ornament from a vacation, so this year it'll be a Disney cruise ornament.

@snowjewelz: I pick it out based on what they like that year - so last year was Barbie for DD and Minecraft for DS - then I write the year on the bottom with a sharpie - that way when they look back over the years they can see what they liked most that year - I like it to have meaning

I was inspired to so this from one of the HB bloggers. LO is too little to choose, but he's really into Kion the Lion Guard and I will get him one of those. World Market also has some great ornaments. I picked up a pickle for DH. Pickle Rick.

@Mamaof2: This is what we do too! And what my MIL did. So I know that in 1987 DH loved Tazmanian Devil and in 2001 he was all about University of Miami football!

We do it too! We have gone to hallmark so far and tried to encourage her to pick one based on something big we did that year or something she really likes. We'll have to get 2 ornaments this year!

We started this tradition the first year we lived together. Now that we’ve been doing it for so many years, we mostly only decorate our tree with the ornaments we choose every year. This will be the first year our 2 year old is able to choose her own. We tag each ornament with babes and the year. We often go to a tree farm that has ornaments, but we’ve also had luck at world market, Fred Meyer, and Joanns.

I love the idea of LO picking one out themselves! Santa brings our tree on Christmas Eve and there is usually at least 1 new ornament every year that symbolizes a trip or interest. Last year was a balloon animal dog since DS was puppy obsessed. I'll have to add a tag with the year or write with sharpie.

Ahh, now I'm so excited! We will probably just end up going to Target or something, so DD1 (3) will pick 1 and DD2 (1) I will pick for her!

We do this. She loves it! I hate that the last couple years she picks out character ones. But we let her pick what she likes. My Mom gives one every year too. I will add that I get a family ornament each year. If we went on vacation, then I try and get one from there. This year I will just do a personalized one that shows a family of 4!

I finally took DD1 to Target and as expected, she picked out Elsa

We didn't pick the exact ornament, but we picked a "theme" and then our parents got us ornaments based on that. My brother has a whole collection of Santa Claus, I have one of snow men. I'm not sure what my sister got...
My dad also got me an angel each year. They're my favorite.

@MaryM: That is so nice. But don't all this make for a LOT of ornaments? Or you just have really big trees?

@snowjewelz: I think once my dad started doing the angels, my mom laid off the snowmen. There didn't end up being one singular theme for each year of my life...sort of overlapping ones.
When I was moved out and had my own tree, I had plenty of ornaments for a decent sized tree (probably one box of ornaments total...I mean, it was only about 20 Christmases worth!). Now I get DH an ornament each year because he didn't have any of his own.

I didn't pick it out, but I was gifted silver-plated sleigh bells. I have about 15 of them and I display them on an ornament stand.
My son's collection is snowflakes, and I put those special ones of his in between mine on the separate ornament tree.
The regular tree is everything else.

We do this too! Their first ornament is always the my first ornament with a picture and then they pick. My daughters five so she also remembers picking it now and looks forward to it. I also write the dates on the bottom with a sharpie if I can.
we got it in the past from target and pbk. This year my daughter was looking for something specific and went to hallmark.

@misolee: Oh thanks for the tip to write the year down! I imagine when they get much older it would be hard to keep track!

LO stopped in his tracks when he spotted Kion the Lion Guard ornament. I put it at eye level for him. He confirmed with me that it was really him before he started roaring at the lion. DH’s special Elmo ornament for him arrives tonight and I’m sure he’s going to flip out.

We did this year because of this thread - I took the boys to the Hallmark store and let them pick one each. B picked Elsa, W picked a bike. As soon as I remember when I have a few minutes I’m going to put a tag on them with their name and the year.
My only advice would be not to make the mistake we made - we (honestly, it was my husband, and I knew it was a bad idea) let them play with the ornaments while in the mall/on the way home and by bedtime Elsa’s head broke off (hooray for glue) and every time W sees his bike on the tree he goes into a “My bike! My biiiiiiike!” wail because he wants to hold it.

My kids are 3 and 18 months old. I'm personally still in the "you're too young to pick" camp, but I did get ornaments with their initials on it this year because DH and I have initial ornaments and they were quite pleased with them.
I saved the first ornaments DS1 made at preschool last year and I think our tradition is going to be to save those for the kids as they grow up and then once their schools stop doing that, we'll have a tradition to craft an ornament using a current picture of them for that year and date it. The ornaments I love looking at when we're at my MILs are those childhood ornaments they made as kids.

@erinbaderin: Haha! K picked a heavy Elsa at first and I got her to pick a lighter plastic one! I was like ummm that one is too heavy for the tree!
@gingerbebe: Yeah, I just started with DD1 that just turned 3. Past 2 years was just ornaments she "made" in daycare! I hope DD2 will be making something to bring home!

@snowjewelz: my mom saved all of my ornaments and gave them to me when I moved out. I thought it was cool then, but watching my 3.5 year old exclaim over all of them and telling him the story behind each has been the highlight of my Christmas this year. So I'm trying to do something similar for my boys. So far, I've picked for him. He's getting a slice of pizza this year
My mom actually still gets us a couple ornaments each year.

My mom gets me an ornament each year and now DS too! I love them. DS is 4.5 and I got him a babies first Christmas. A few weeks ago we were at a craft fair and he wanted an ornament so I let him pick one. Last year we made ornaments. Going forward I'll let him pick one a year whether it be a craft fair or store. We also made some again this year.
It was a lot of fun telling him about my special ornaments and where they were from when we decorated.
