For me it depends on the cut and fabric of the shorts. Crisp twill "dressier" short that I might wear with wedges or tuck a blouse into? Keep em shut. More casual, looser fitting or stuff I foresee shlepping around in? Open them. But my life is pretty casual so I only have one pair of shorts with the pockets sewn shut

I tend to keep them closed, especially in the back if there are any, but shorts to me are casual and I don't worry so much about the line they create.

I only wear shorts in casual situations, so I open and use them. I wish every article of clothing had pockets.
