Hi bees, I'm not on here very often but I'm just putting this out there for any Canadians that might be in my position - I moved to Australia 12 years ago and became a dual citizen, had my son here 3 years ago. We traveled back to Canada twice before my son was 1, with both of us using only our Australian passports.

Recently a dear friend was getting married in Canada and it coincided with some time I had off work so I planned to take my son back to Canada for a holiday and the wedding. Thankfully I hadn't bought tickets yet when I found out that it is now compulsory for Canadian dual citizens with current passports of both countries of citizenship. The kicker is that my son is an obligate Canadian citizen because I'm his mom, but because he was born in Australia, I have to get him a certificate of citizenship before I can apply for his passport, and the CoC takes 12-16 MONTHS to process. They can expedite in extreme circumstances (death in the immediate family is the only one they mention on the gov't canada website), but otherwise we are stuck. I've resigned myself to it after fighting with a million people on the phone and at the Canadian consulate in Australia.

I hope that this can help anyone who has travel planned and who is in my position! And Canadians, if you have a child born overseas apply for his or her CoC IMMEDIATELY after they are born! I wish I had!
