Friends of ours got married last summer with just a few close family members, and at the end of this month they are having a reception at a park. I think it's also a combined going away party since they are moving out of state this summer. It looks like it will be really low key, nothing fancy. What kind of gift should we give? How do we decide a price range? Or do we treat this like any other wedding reception?

Assuming they're not registered anywhere I would probably do cash/check.

I would spend @ $50. For full blown wedding receptions I usually give between $150-200.

How close are you to these friends?
That would be my main deciding factor on how much I would give.
Also if I really counted it as a going away party too... would that be a double gift? I'm not sure.
Also how fancy is this park reception? Sit down dinner?
I'm going to assume these aren't close friends and you aren't planning to double it as a going away gift. Also if it is basically a big picnic and not a fancy sit down dinner. Then maybe 50-100 cash.

We had friends' who did something similar a few months after getting married in Hawaii. I ordered them a bottle of Pineapple Champagne from a winery in Maui (where they got married), and had it engraved. They opened it on their first anniversary.
They were already a well-established couple and owned a home together and everything, so they really weren't expecting anything. Some people brought gifts and some didn't.

I'd treat it as a wedding-type present and give the equivalent cash value with a card in an envelope.

I'd probably give a date night gift--movie tickets and a gift card to a favorite restaurant. That way, they can take a break from packing to enjoy some relaxation and it won't just be another thing for them to pack.
