That's disgusting.

So sad. I feel like I have heard so much annoyance at people's allergies and a lot of rhetoric about how kids today just aren't tough. I don't expect he world to revolve around my son's allergies but they are much tougher on him/us than anyone else.

Who makes any sort of joke about shooting children?! What the eff.

What a bizarre and horrifying "joke" to make and it sounds like people were genuinely laughing! I definitely worry about the day that my kids go off to school because they both have food allergies. Videos like this one doesn't make me feel very good.

This is absolutely disgusting! As a parent with a child with severe allergies, I'm extremely offended. But I also don't understand how ANYONE could make light of "shooting" children, regardless of the circumstances. And the fact that everyone laughed! UGH!

@Mrs. Taco: I think, especially with regards to milk allergies, that people tend to think you really mean they have an intolerance, and not an allergy, even though you are saying they are allergic. Whenever I tell people that Xander suffers anaphylaxis, they seem very surprised that it's due to milk! And I also find a lot of people don't seem to understand what exactly IS a milk product!! When we were at the PICU and ordering food for Xander, one of the nurses asked if I wanted BUTTER on his carrots!! And they KNEW he was allergic to milk! It's very frustrating.

@Mrs. Taco: *big hugs* You are such a good mom. You last paragraph really touched me. I don't think you are being over dramatic. I think our parent's generation just weren't as aware as ours and that's tough to deal with.

@Mrs. Taco: Yeah, when the PICU nurse asked if I wanted butter on his carrots, I think I probably just stared at her and was like "He's ALLERGIC to MILK!" and she was all "Is butter a milk product?" I couldn't believe it! And this is also why I'm always so scared to let Xander have anything that ANYONE had made besides me! I just don't trust people to actually be careful since it seems like so many people just don't understand what is considered a milk product or not, despite labels clearly stating things like "CONTAINS MILK" on them!

Sorry to threadjack! We just saw the allergist today, so allergies are fresh on my mind!!

@Adira: when we told a pediatrician at his practice he was allergic to milk (although he has vomiting not anaphylaxis,) he asked if he was getting calcium from other sources like butter and yogurt.

Someone at our daycare asked if he was allergic to peanuts or just peanut butter.

I was on a special diet for years because I have a condition called interstitial cystits which is like having a permanent bladder infection. It's in remission at the time, but I couldn't eat anything acidic or it would put me in a lot of pain ( like how coffee makes you pee a million times when you have a UTI). My patents treated it like such a joke the first few times I went home to visit them. They thought I was making it up and nun diet was fake. It was pretty hurtful. I always wanted to yell that it was so much harder on me than them.

@Maysprout: ahh good point. Unfortunately that's not it. He's never actually drank milk, but he vomited for six months and stopped when we cut out all yogurt/cheese/butter.

What a terrible and disgusting thing to say and laugh about! How could anyone joke about shooting children? They shouldn't be working near children. That would scare me as a parent to hear about that nonsense....not funny!

@teamjse: Thanks for helping me understand how to be more accommodating and sensitive towards parents and children with allergies. It's nothing to joke about with life threatening allergies.

@Mrs. Taco: I remember reading your posts about your sweet girl going to the ER because of the milk allergies. I definitely have a better understanding of severe allergies after reading about these issues on HB. I would never think any mom of being overly dramatic regarding allergies so keep on spreading the word. You're a great mom!

@Freckles: Completely agree! I'm really thankful that HB has made me aware of how severe food allergies can be since I've never had to deal with them personally and don't have any IRL friends dealing with them.

@Foodnerd81: Honestly, I had never heard of someone being anaphylaxic because of dairy before Xander either, so I don't blame you!! Although milk is a common allergen (hence why it's on warning labels), you just don't really think of it as being THAT severe until it happens!

@Mama Bird: I'm glad she resigned, though I kind of think she should've been straight-out fired...
