i agree with you. some people just can't afford all those clothes and (gasp) even wear the same clothes all week! unfortunately, kids that age notice and tease. although, i personally wouldn't want to wear uniforms.

I am not going to lie, when I was in highschool I wished often that we were made to wear uniforms for many reasons. I hated picking out clothes to wear, I hated what other people would wear (mostly the hooker looking girls) and I hate that people are identified so often by what they wear.

Trust me, I went to catholic school. Even with uniforms everyone knows who has money and who doesn't. Cool kids are still cool kids and geeks are still geeks. If it isn't the "cool" jeans than it is the "cool" shoes or socks or hair bobs, or whatever. Kids just know. I went to both public and private and the only difference was that I froze my rear off at private because I had to wear an ugly polyester skirt all winter. I would have much rather have been uncool and warm than uncool and miserable.

Oh hands down I think mandatory uniforms are a good idea..at least until high school if not all the way through. I have a couple different perspectives on this. I wore school uniforms in a public school setting form 3-6th grade. It was awesome! It made me feel pride in my school, I knew that when the uniform was on that it was time to work, we all looked the same, we didn't pick on people for not having brand name things, we couldn't tell who the rich and poor kids were, etc. I loved it as a kid! I got up and knew immediately what I would be wearing. I had plenty of time to "express myself" after school and on the weekends and in the summer. It was honestly no big deal.

Now, as a teacher I would 100% vote in favor of uniforms. I truly believe that it helps kids take pride in their work and helps them focus and lead to better results and fewer discipline problems. Not to mention, my job would be a lot easier if I didn't have to constantly tell Susie to stop messing with her bedazzled vest or stop and tie the bow on Jane's dress or stop a bragging match between what boy has the nicest brand of sweatpants. I just like things neat and orderly and I love kids in uniforms.

Where I live all schools have uniforms and students are expected to wear them. I think it's good. You don't have to worry about what to wear each day and even though everyone is wearing the same thing there is plenty of scope for personalising/showing your identity. Probably the main reason I like it is because it does eliminate most of the bullying/teasing associated with what students are wearing. It just doesn't happen.

I like the idea of school uniforms, but not because it gives a uniform look (it doesn't), but because students are much more likely to follow a dress code. There are no issues of students wearing offensive t-shirts, because t-shirts are not allowed. No low cut shirts, too short skirts (well, could happen, but less likely), and other similar clothing issues.

I taught in a private school last year, and while it gave the kids a more uniform look overall, you could still see who had money and who didn't, at least at this school where uniforms were guidelines more than "you must wear this EXACT shirt"
By the end of the school year, you could tell who bought their jumper where by how faded it looked.

here in japan, all kids have to wear uniforms, both private and public schools. even though they are all wearing uniforms, you can tell there is a big difference in how they wear the uniform. some girls have their skirts shorter or their ties tied differently. i like the idea of having uniforms but i don't think it makes much difference as to how they treat each other. i think you can still tell by how the uniforms are worn, who the "cool" kids are and who aren't. i don't think it stops them from making fun of each other or from being nicer to each other.
