We have both and the scooter gets more use from both kids.

DD turned 3 in September and DS will be 2 in January.

We have both and they both get a lot of use, but the balance bike definitely gets more. We got a Little Tykes scooter for about $25 and gave it to him for Easter.

@junebugsmama: since birthday and christmas are so close - can you do scooter for birthday and bike for christmas?

I don't think you can go wrong, but I wouldn't do a cheaper scooter. The micro mini is so easy to use compared to cheaper scooters, especially for that age! (We just scored one from Target for $55, which is at least a little more manageable.) We went back and forth between a balance bike and the scooter last year for DD1's 3rd birthday. No regrets! DD2 turned 2 last week and is getting one for Christmas because they both love it so much and fight over it.

@rattles: Agree. We did a cheaper scooter first and it sucked. I found the micro mini used and no regrets trading it in! I would say scooter for a 2 year old as my very physical kiddo didn't get into her balance bike til closer to 3. And we had it since 1.5!

If you get the scooter, you should get the Micro Maxi instead. The base height is the same as the Mini, but you'll get years more use out of it! My kids use their scooters all the time. We had a cheap balance bike (all plastic) and my son used it maybe 3 times.
