I remember reading about silicone breast pumps on HB a while ago. Can you girls tell me what you do with them? Do you use one while the baby is nursing on the other side? If so, do you not switch sides with the baby? I'm interested in getting the max benefits of pumping and nursing this next time around so I'd love to know about these little silicone pumps!

I LOOOOVE this thing! So every time I nurse, I stick it on the other boob and it catches all the let down milk. Granted, it's only like 1-2 oz (or more/less), but as a newborn who nurses a bajillion times a day, I saved enough to freeze a bottle daily and it helped with my stash SO much without doing any extra work pretty much! I cannot recommend it enough.

I didn't know about these until after I had weaned my 1st, but it definitely seems like something I need to get when we have #2 someday.

I just got the haakaa with #3 and it’s amazing! I auction it to the opposite breast as I’m nursing and I’ve been able to get 2-3 oz a day by just doing it for a feed. And I’m 2 weeks in! I’m going to be getting one for every baby shower from now on!

@birdofafeather: @snowjewelz: After you are done nursing our baby on the one side, do you switch your baby to the other side, even though you have had the silicone suction cup there? I would seriously love to collect any amount, even an ounce per nursing would be amazing.

@agold: Yes. It's not doing any pumping.... It really just catch the milk that comes out with letdown, maybe the suctioned phase encouraged a little more to come out but it's business as usual in terms of feeding the baby.

@agold: yep, still nurse on the side I had the haakaa on after! Hasn’t seemed to make a difference! She’s gained 7 oz since birth 2 weeks ago so she’s getting all she needs! And I’m still collecting milk.
ETA: I used a milkie milk saver with my first two and that collected a little per side (I leak a ton from the opposite side!) but the haakaa’s suction definitely encourages more milk output! I’m really impressed.

I didn’t like it at all. It did not stay on. At all! I tried so many times. I have super small boobs so maybe that’s why? Waste of money for me

I found this thing for my second and I loved it. It totally helped me store up a little stash while doing basically nothing. I would nurse on one side and drip on the other! I would sometimes switch sides and sometimes not.

@snowjewelz: @birdofafeather: great to know! I will order the hakaa one unless anyone suggests something different. I have heard of the milkies saver thing but i actually never really dripped so im hoping the suction thing will help a little.
@Mrs. Champagne: bummer it didnt work for you. I am only half hopeful it will work for me. I think its under $40 so in terms of collecting breast milk, i consider it worth the risk even if it doesnt work.

@agold: I didn’t get the Hakka one; just a random cheaper brand on amazon and it worked fine. Sometimes it looses suction and sometimes it takes a few tries to get it on but overall the pros to me far outweighs any cons.

Just want to echo everyone that I love the haakaa. I've accumulated 50 oz or so already after just using it a few weeks. When you use it, I recommend holding baby in football hold so that baby isn't in the way of the pump.

In the first 6 weeks I collected 70 extra oz to freeze and used it 2-3x a day. Now my supply has regulated down a bit; so the milk I collect in the morning feed gets used for a bedtime bottle fed by DH. I have 4 that I use and there have been a couple times where all of them were in the dishwasher. I don't think 1 is enough, but 2 or 3 would be fine.

So I had a hakaa and used it a few times. I thought the suction was off sometimes. Sometimes too strong, other times too weak. But what made me really stop using it was I was worried I was collecting only foremilk since it was really capturing my letdown only and my kiddo really only liked to nurse from one side at a time. This isn’t scientific by any means but I think with my first kiddo I had a bit of an imbalance of fore/hindmilk and I didn’t want to encourage it this time around.

@Littlebit7: I haven’t used mine much because I am lazy, but I did notice how when I did use it (just to catch the initial let down on the alternate side I wasn’t nursing) the milk was clearly foremilk, it looked so clear compared to when I normally pump! I have never had an issue with foremilk/hindmilk but I could see how that potentially could be an issue if overused.
