@DesertDreams88: I am contracted for 187 days from 8:45am-4:00pm with an hour lunch. The state of Ohio says that schools have to go a certain number of hours. Based on my contract, my distinct has an extra 20 days worth of hours built in that we can use for weather. Middle has 10 and high school has 8. We go from August 12thish to may 31st. Last year we use zero calamity days and we had to work the whole school calendar. This year we’ve used 7 days between hot days and snow days.

When the daycare closes for any reason, we do not get reimbursed nor do they make up the days. I actually assumed that all daycares were the same way and now I'm discontent knowing that some aren't!

I hope the teachers get paid since we're paying, but I have no idea. Our daycare provides insurance and benefits, so I imagine they're pretty decent to their employees on weather days.

LO1’s daycare (that she isn’t attending right now because I am on mat leave) is affiliated with the University I work at. 80% of the daycare kids are the kids of students or staff. The daycare only closes when the University is closed.

They university has only ever cancelled night classes due to weather and the daycare Is closed before night classes start. They closed early once because of the weather.

We pay monthly (based on being there all year) no matter what.

@Amorini: it is helpful to hear more about your situation and where you are coming from and I think the focus on advocating for the future sounds like a productive outlet for your frustration.

Based on what you described, my guess would be that this was the school making a decision that works for them re:make up days without taking the daycare side into account. My hope, without knowing the dynamics, would be that this was a genuine oversight—I can imagine them just needing to come up with a plan and get it out and they forgot to consider the daycare portion. Going off that, I would advocate for helping the school find a way to make decisions like this in the future that are able to applied across the board to both school and daycare alike. This should be a logical sell—closures affect both sides equally so make up days should be structured the same. So I would try to talk to the administration about how the decision making can be changed. Does that seem like a possible starting point?

Some parents at my school started a petition. We are in the South too and I know exactly what you're talking about. The teachers did not get paid during these "snow days" and even though they follow the local school calendar, in reality, the school is private and not part of the local school system. One of the points the petition made was: we went one full week in August and paid tuition for it (understandably). We missed more than one week of school so either one week should be credited or missed days should have makeup days. There are "teacher work days" that the local school gets off that can be used for makeup if needed but the school isn't considering. Basically, the petition was stating that want to know where the money is going if teachers are not getting paid.

Even though it's a half day program at a local church, it's the biggest preschool in the area with over 400 students. Parents collectively have started a dialogue with the school to see if they can get things done.

@ladybee: “Calamity Days” is a great way to put it! That's crazy that you had hot days and snow days, though I guess that’s like us having hurricane days and snow days.

@babypugs: It’s so interesting that there are so many ways that daycares are run.

@YouGotMe: Yeah! You’re on mat leave! I haven’t kept up!

@MamaCate: So well put. Yes, I realize that there are many layers here to our situation! I’m afraid the decision could not have been a mere oversight because our daycare director was involved. She said that she advocated her best, but the administration chose what they chose. I guess I’d just like to know why they couldn’t make it a win-win for all. Thanks for helping me keep it constructive.

@misolee: Hearing this — and that you’re in the South and no doubt effected by this wild weather year — is helpful. Plus just knowing that other daycares are probably facing some challenges. I think the money thing that you mentioned is part of what bothers me. We don’t know any other families well at daycare yet so right now we feel like the only ones who are unhappy about the situation.
