We actually didn't have any friends in the area when we first moved here, but we've met quite a few! It's been a nice quality-of-life enhancement for us. 
Do you have many friends that live nearby? Do you get together with them more often than with other friends who live further away?

Nope. I have a few writing friends, and an old work friend (current work friend of my husband's) who we trade cat-sitting services with. But no one I'd consider close. Closest good friend lives 9 hours away. Other one live in the Northwest while I'm in the Southeast. My family is 16 hours drive away. Mother of my godkids lives in England.

If nearby means not having to get in the car and drive, no we don't. We have friends within 15-20 minutes but that's the closest. I'm hoping we might meet some other parents in our neighborhood once we have a LO. It's so hard to meet people in our neighborhood since most use their backyards and we don't see a lot of people around!

Yes, lots! We live near where I grew up and where we both went to college, and most of our friends stayed in the DFW area.

I think I spawned this spinoff. Our friends all live 45 minutes away with the only exceptions being a few of my husband's work friends. We live in a very small, very Mennonite community where everyone tends to keep to themselves and their own little groups. We're moving closer to where we grew up though so instead of 45 minutes we'll be like 10 minutes away and I think that will make seeing friends much easier in the future. We're excited.

Yes, a decent number! Many of my college friends stayed in Chicago, and live in the downtown area or surrounding suburbs. So we have friends that are within 30 mins of us, and many within 10 mins. I guess I never thought about how lucky we are for that!

@mrbee: Definitely! Our "group" of about 20 people, gets together maybe once a month or every other month depending on how busy people are. And then subgroups within the bigger group get together more frequently.
My "far away" friends are all out of state or even out of the country, so we don't see them very often at all!

My husband's best friend actually lives 4 houses down from us, which is amazing! Most of our friends are within 20-30 minutes of each other, minus my best friend who lives 3 hours away.

We have a lot of acquaintances that actually live in our building or within a 10 minute walk... The beauty of living in New York! But those tend to be acquaintences/parents of LO's friends and classmates. As far as close friends though, most are further like in an outer borough or in NJ (anywhere from 30mins to 1.5 drives). We have much more of a network in our hometowns in CA and are excited to be closer to them when we move next year. It makes a difference being close to great friends

We just moved to a new state. Well, not JUST. More like a year ago. So I only have 2 friends in the area. I have people that I enjoy at work, but we don't really hang out outside of work. It kind of sucks. I feel really far removed from my friends so I'm becomming really bad at keeping in touch. I'd love to find some friends who are also couples with children but it's tough to pull off!

We have some friends that are pretty near by (maybe 15-20 minutes away?) but honestly we don't get to see our friends all that often (or as often as we would like). With our hectic work schedules and 20 month old toddler, we spend most of our free time running errands and spending time with family. We usually see at least one of our friends once a month but not consistently. We really should try harder though. Not sure how that's gonna happen once baby#2 comes. = \

We have my best gf and her fiance about 2 miles away. We both have a handful of friends that are within a 20 min drive, but still find it hard to get together often...

We live a good 45 minute drive from our closest friends and family. We have acquaintences in the neighborhood though, so that helps.

Unfortunately we do not. I live in the same town I grew up in, and my old friends from high school and college (yup same town) have since moved away. We are all in different parts of our lives -- focusing on education, career or family, mainly career. In my group of friends, I am the only one married with a child. I wish I had more friends nearby who would like to hang out with a boring wife/mother.
