At what point did you start throwing parties that included friends? (Either a family and friends party, or separate small parties for each group.) I'm especially interested to know if you did a family only first birthday party--my LO is turning 2 and I haven't decided if we're going to do anything with friends yet or not. Last year we kept it small and simple with just some family.

Her 1st and 2nd birthday parties we had friends (hers and ours) and family!

We didn't have friends at his 1st birthday, but we will be having them this year for his 2nd.

We invited friends to both birthday parties that he's had so far (1st and 2nd). I was active in a playgroup of moms and babies from the time my son was 4 months old, so I invited all of those friends to his birthday party and they invited us to theirs.

His first and second birthday was family and some of our friends. We thought about inviting some of his daycare friends to his third, but we decided to make it a just the three of us family day...it'll be his last being an only child. We're taking him to a local amusement park. Next year we plan on inviting friends.
He just went to a Chuck E Cheese party for one of his daycare friends, though! (third bday)

We started inviting lo's friends (from daycare, parents not already friends of ous) on her 2nd birthday. Family friends/our friends from first bday

We have only celebrated a first birthday. I used it as an excuse to see my friends and threw an adult-friendly party (alcoholic drinks and tea sandwiches followed by pizza for the after party) that also included children's entertainment and birthday cake. So it was mostly our friends and their kids, plus our parents and a few other relatives.
I don't know what we will do next year.

We just did his first friends party yesterday for his third birthday! It was great since he "got it". Any younger than that and family only is the way to go, in my opinion. They don't really understand yet so it isn't worth the time and effort, for me anyway
