I am pro life and would not consider abortion, personally.

I'm anti-abortion so any would be considered "too late" for me.

If I got pregnant and didn't want to keep the baby, 9 weeks

If the baby had some sort of medical issue I would have one anytime up until 20 weeks (NC's law) I thought it was 24 earlier, oops!

I said 2 months. I think at that point most should have known for 4 weeks they are pregnant and have made their decision.

I am pro-choice, but personally don't think I'd ever be able to get one. My friend works at a sexual health clinic and they can refer people up to 24 weeks to a clinic in Toronto. That really upsets me because we all know babies can live at that point. ETA: these are people that have just decided they no longer want a baby and need a referal because the clinic here only does up to 12 weeks.

When you say danger to the mother, what about potential defects to the fetus/baby that are only found at 20 weeks? That case about the surrogate who refused to terminate at 21 weeks got me thinking a lot about that issue.

Just saw your edit, for the general population I stick with 20 weeks. Now, if there was a life threatening condition for mom or baby, I say as late as you need to. I would hate to think I was carrying a pregnancy that was going to put my life in danger or have no chance of the baby living, and not being able to end it.

@pui: I guess I don't understand why anyone would wait that long to have an abortion? I am not totally knowledgeable in late-term abortions so I can't really comment. Obviously that's their choice and if it were legal then they are entitled to do so. Personally, I wouldn't be able to but again, that's just for me and my body.

I would understand getting a later abortion for medical reasons (finding out the baby has a disability and not being able to care for that child or wanting to care for those types of needs and/or placing those types of needs on another family). Although usually that's found out at the beginning of the second trimester. If that is an option for you and you opted out of having testing done and found out much later that your child had these specific needs/disabilities, I find that completely irresponsible. Which is why I think getting the testing done is so insanely crucial.

This is a really difficult question. I'd like to say up until viability, but I just don't know. But for a more personal perspective on this, I recommend this article. I read it when it was published back in 2007 and it really stuck with me, and I think of it almost every time questions about abortion law come up. It's written by a woman who got an abortion after 19 weeks because some severe abnormalities were discovered in the fetus around that time, and it was obviously a VERY painful decision. Northeast here. I believe in a woman’s right to choose. As long as the fetus is growing inside of her body, it’s her decision regardless of what stage of pregnancy she is in.

I read a story years ago about a woman who discovered that her unborn child had a rare disorder that would risk both of their lives if she carried the child to term. I don’t remember exactly what stage she was in but I know it was pretty late in the game. She aborted because she (and her significant other) felt that it was the best decision that they could make for their family. I couldn’t imagine telling a woman that she had to gamble her life on an unborn child after she’d already made the decision and come to terms with ending the pregnancy.

I think there are situations. If a 14 year old is raped (G-d forbid) and gets pregnant, I'm sure a) she's not ready, b) the parents don't want that to happen and c) if she did give birth it's from a traumatizing event, and every time she looks at that child it's not a child made from love initially.

I personally don't believe in abortion due to medical reasons as well, and I do feel that there should have to be emotional and psychological counselling required following signing the paper to have an abortion.

ETA: I also feel the same about Plan B only because I know people who have been careless and choose to use Plan B instead of contraceptives. If you're dumb enough to sleep around with no protection you should know the consequences.

I don't have a direct answer. But, I do know that my personal view on things have changed since becoming a mother. I personally would never have one now, whereas pre-motherhood; I had thought it was an option if I were ever put in a situation for it. It's a tough call and I def have the same thoughts and questions as you posed. Very thoughtful and thought provoking

@pui: agree on this "I just think sometimes we should at least consider the other life at stake here before just discarding it like it's nothing at all."

@pui: out of interest, do you, or anyone else consider the morning after pill to be comparable to having an abortion?
