I guess it depends on how much time you will spend in your room. We arent' much for lounging around so for me, a hotel , even a nice one, is just for sleeping, pretty much. I'd rather pay for fun things to do than an nicer place to sleep. That said, I wouldn't stay in a total dive either...

Activities! It'll be more memorable than the room and fun to experience.

I would splurge on the room. When we went away for our anniversary we spent a lot more time in the room than I expected. It was just nice to lounge around and read in peace, things you don't get to do at home with a toddler. But take this with a grain of a salt because my opinion was slightly colored by the fact that my husband would never agree to go to the ballet with me!

We are going away for our five year anniversary in October too! I say splurge on room. I seriously don't care what activities we do, I just want a nice room and a nice bed where I can sleep as much as I want. We will go to decent dinners but I don't need super fancy. Dh would hate the ballet. We are actually thinking about going to a movie in the theater since we would never pay a baby sitter just for that! Our idea of a vacation has really changed.

But also, i am pregnant, so I think that is making want the rest in the hotel more than anything else.

For us, given that we will rarely get away now with a baby, all we'd want to do is seriously lounge so I would totally splurge on a nice hotel, order room service and just chill and SLEEP! I wouldn't even have the energy or interest to explore right now, haha.

We've made a couple of trips to the riverwalk and always stay at the Holiday Inn Express. It's just a short walk away from all the activity of the riverwalk and in a place like that, I'd much rather have the money to spend on food and activities.

I'm more of a stay in a nice hotel person. We have a place I love to go to that's in a beautiful location, you can upgrade your room to have a whirlpool bath tub, and there's great lake views. A place like that, some room service, and the hotel pool are pretty much all I'd need to be happy :). I like the ballet, but not enough to use up a kid free weekend on it.

It depends on what kind of getaway you're hoping for. DH and I are getting a room locally for one night for our 5 year anniversary next Friday. We literally have not spend a night away minus delivery for #2. We are looking for lots of quality adult alone time so a nicer room was important. Literally all we're looking to do is spend time together and go out for good food!

DH and I love going out to eat and doing stuff so I vote for activities. More memories that way! Even if it means just a nicer meal over a bigger room. Maybe you can tell the hotel it's your anniversary and see if they'll upgrade you for free, if they have capacity?

@abbydabbydoodlebug: I'd definitely do the Springhill and splurge on activities in San Antonio! We were over in San Antonio recently and we just stayed in a Courtyard Marriott not even very near the Riverwalk (like maybe a mile walk away from it) to leave more money for fun stuff. We had a great time!

I'd try to aim for the middle. A good room but not a splurge and 1 nice activity + a nice dinner.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: I would totally splurge on activities. That being said, you can usually get a really nice room on the riverwalk within your budget by going through Priceline.com

We went to San Antonio last year. It's not one of my favorite cities to visit (sorry). So I would absolutely splurge on the hotel and follow @oliviaoblivia's plan for "activities".
