What does everyone do with newborns when they are awake? I am a FTM with a sweet little 7 week old, as she is starting to stay awake for longer stretches Im not quite sure what to do to keep her occupied/ entertained. We read stories, she goes on her play mat, she's not a fan of her swing or being in the moby wrap for long periods of time. I am constantly talking or singing to her but I still run out of things to do, Its so cold where we live right now so going outside is not much of an option.

Don’t be afraid to let her entertain herself, too! It’s NOT your job to keep her stimulated for every waking moment. Lay her on her mat in the sun, put her in her bouncer with a toy. The world is so new to them, things we find boring are fascinating to a newborn!

I used to do a lot of exercises with my daughters arms and legs. Sort of baby gymnastics. I googled some exercises and did them.

@mrsmontana: I remember this being so hard when mine were babies too. With my second I took her out on errands, walks (in a mall or something if too cold outside), etc a lot. Even just to walk around target...otherwise I would get bored too!

I played these little games with lo and also baby gymnastics exercises like mentioned in pp. Just watch your babie's cues though, my baby is easily overstimulated so not too much at once.

@bees_knees: agree! They definitely don't need constant stimulation and they are delighted to discover the world around them. Reading is also a nice habit to get into. The one thing I did all the time was just talk to my babies, basically, I would narrate everything I was doing even if I were cooking and the baby was in a bouncy chair.

We did a ton of activity mat time,I actually had two different ones with different toys, in different ends of the house. he LOVED his mat and could play independently up to an hour on it.
I do wish I had done more reading with high contrast books, songs, and talking.

@lamariniere: @bees_knees: yes this. Everything is so new and stimulating and they are so easily overstimulated. I remember reading that just walking around with them and narrating everything is perfect.
Just sitting with him on my lap and singing. Little baby exercises and stretches.Oh and he loved his tiny love mobile. So I’d just leave him under it in his crib.
And for sure it will benefit both of you to allow some self-entertainment. If baby is content to just chill and gaze around the room, embrace it!

I put my baby on a blanket on the floor quite a bit. I don’t think they need to be constantly entertained.
