dD has been sick for a couple of days starting with vomiting which is now diarrhea. She was eating and drinking ok yesterday and started the day ok today but since about 9 am she hasn't wanted to eat or drink anything. When should I get worried about dehydration? She is still crying tears but I can't tell if her diapers are wet or if it's just diarrhea. Any tips or suggestions for trying to get her to drink and/or support would be greatly appreciated! She's almost 2 and this is the first time she's been sick so I'm just not sure what to do.

@mkp17: have you tried popsicles? Gatorade? Juice?

@mkp17: I second @Mrs. Tiger:! Popsicles are our go to. They are a super treat here. Watered down Gatorade too.

@mkp17: I've resorted to using a syringe of water. For some reason both girls have liked to drink that way when they are sick and mostly refusing liquids. Otherwise I can sometimes get them to drink a smoothie (mostly water, little bit of juice, and banana and ice or whatever I think they might tolerate), or eat a popsicle. I'd say if there's any doubt, give the ped's office a call. Hope she's feeling better soon!

Thanks everyone, I appreciatethe advice!! I tried those with no success and pulled out the last resort of giving little brother a sippy cup (even though he can't drink from one yet). Of course she wanted what he had, took it from him and started drinking :). Now just dealing with a ton of poop that hopefully goes away soon and doesn't find its way to little bro.

@mkp17: are you giving probiotics too? It really does help! We deal with a lot of diarrhea because of iron issues.

@mkp17: aw I'm sorry! My dd2 just went through that a week or so ago! I called my ped and the nurse said as long as she has tears you should be good. Another trick was to wash your hands then feel the inside of their mouth. If there is still saliva you are good too.
My other trick is ice cubes. My 34m old LOVES ice cubes!!! But good trick on giving her sibling a sippy.
If you're really worried I would push pedialyte. The salt in it helps your body retain water.Hope she feels better ASAP!

@mkp17: same exact thing went through our house. I actually used a good scale to weigh the diapers to measure his liquid intake and his poop output. Trying to see how much he was actually keeping in. Gross I know but it helped. Also often diapers seemed dry but by weight he was peeing a couple ounces which was reassuring.

@mkp17: we use culturalle for kids. It mixes into juice very well. Or milk if they can stomach it.
