My 2.5 year old sits on the potty 4-5x a day at school and at home every night before bath, but has yet to actually pee in the potty. She "tries" and will often push out a fart ( 
) but can't seem to figure out how to release the pee. I thought by now it would have at least happened accidentally with all that time on the potty, but it hasn't and she's starting to get frustrated. How can I teach her how to let the pee out?!

I don't know if you can teach her how to do it, I think you just have to catch her at a time that pee comes so she starts to understand how it feels. If she's starting to get frustrated maybe she isn't ready? You might want to back off for a month and then see.

We are training DS, 3 yrs old, who has to be trained to move up room at daycare in January. Honestly, when he gave us a sign that he needed to go, we put him on the potty with the tablet and didn't let him get up. Daycare said he was there for about an hour the first time. I think he finally figured it out.
However, he was definitely not happy about it. If you don't have any reason to get her potty trained, I'm not sure I would try this.

Are you actually potty training? I agree with @erinbaderin: that you can't really teach it - you just have to catch them when they are doing it so they start to learn how that feels and how it feels to have to pee. Oh Crap! Potty Training is a great book about how to potty train if you haven't read something.

I used to put my son on when I knew he probably had to go and I let him sit there for a long time distracted by iPad or reading books. And finally one day he was just distracted enough that it just started coming out (like he forgot he wasn’t in a diaper). And we just rewarded and praised like crazy. He caught on pretty quickly after that.
I didn’t do Oh Crap/3 Day because my ped was sort of against it. But when I knew he could use the potty, in order to get rid of diapers I would just take his diaper off first thing in the morning (he woke up dry consistently before he was daytime trained) and let him play around naked before school. He then felt the sensation and realized he didn’t have a diaper on and would run to the potty. He actually never had a full on accident on the floor doing it this way, he just would trickle a little and stop himself until he got to the potty. I didn’t make him do this all day or anything. Until he was consistent I’d still put a diaper on for outings and if we had to go somewhere I didn’t clear our schedule. So I guess it was sort of a modified 3-day? Same idea but way more lax.
He was 3 though when we started this. Personally I will wait till 3 for my future son too because it was a very easy process since he was mature enough and very ready.
(Full disclosure he still doesn’t poop on the potty but I was told by ped this is normal and he’ll decide when he’s ready. Poop only happens once every other day though, whereas pee happens several times a day. So pee was my priority. He wears underwear all day and all night. When he has to poop he asks for a diaper. I ask if he wants to go on the potty and get his prize. He says no. And I’m assured that one day he’ll say yes and do it. It just seems so much less stressful that way). -
Oh and someone else just posted here a couple days ago that they pour warm water over the privates when they are sitting on the potty and that can help? Same idea as why they have the urge to pee in the tub. The warm water triggers it.

@SeptMomma12: Same problem here. She desperately wants to pee on the potty but can't actually do it. She does the same push fart and has actually pooped on the potty a couple of times that way!

Thanks everyone. We're not "actively" potty training, but visiting the potty is part of the schedule in daycare class, so there's certainly an element of potty training going on. I just feel bad that she can't seem to figure out what to do. I'm going to try some of these tips!
My son was peeing on the potty every chance he got and begging to wear underwear by his 2nd birthday so this is all new to me!

I think it helps to offer a few favorite books for them to look at while they wait to see if pee might come.

@SeptMomma12: When DD was potty training we'd sit her down and then sing the ABCs a couple of times. It took her mind off "trying" so she could relax enough to let it out.

If you can let her run around naked outside or with panties and pants inside. You’re going to end up washing clothes, but if she can feel it happening, she will make the connection that relaxing in that way makes pee happen. With a diaper on, they don’t notice as much since it’s just absorbed right away.
