It seems like every time I set up (and intentionally participate in!) an activity for the girls, like sensory play with shaving cream or various doughs or water play outside, DD1 will do it for 1 to 2 minutes and then say "I think I'm done..." and she wants to stop. I usually set these things up on rainy days or days when they seem particularly bored or needing my attention. Does anyone else's LO do this? It's so frustrating for me when I've done all the work to set it up, get excited to play with them and she's ready to stop and throws a fit when we don't stop right away.

B does this, and I agree that it's frustrating, but I try to remind myself that they're little people with their own wants and needs and if I was in the mood to, say, read a book and my husband came over and told me we were going on a hike I wouldn't be that excited about it either.

@erinbaderin: ha! I hadn't thought of it that way. I guess I usually feel like she seems like she needs some help directing her energy somewhere, but maybe she actually just wants some down time with me.

My four year old DD does the same thing! Drives me crazyyyyyy!!! She is also always too "tired"🙄.

@Purpledaisy: haha my DD too. I also probably set up an activity because they were whining or complaining a lot, I was trying to make that stop, not make more of it! Lol

Our 3 year old is like this. I've also noticed the same thing when we plan fun dates (like going on a new adventure somewhere I think she'll love).
This has lead to us setting up her play area with just a few things (art cart, magnet tiles, a doll box, and a sensory box). When I notice she's been playing with one thing for quite awhile, I'll add another item in that category. When she's really into the sensory box, I might do a fun craft with her. Otherwise, I just know she's getting into independent play, and she'll tell me if she's bored.

Ask her what she wants, give her options. Then set it up. It's more meaningful and enjoyable when kids have a choice or opportunity to make a decision on their own. And have her help you get the materials and supplies for the activity.

@Teachermama: I do usually ask her first. She always says yes and then is done shortly after.
