A live rat in an aquarium!! I was SO thankful that I didn't get it and got this awesome shirt instead.
What's the best (or rather, the worst) gift you've seen at a white elephant exchange?

Best: I printed an 8x10 picture of my dog and paw printed it as an autograph and then framed it for my family who all think she's annoying and are not dog people. It gets passed around every year.
Worst: There was the grossest smelling old bean bag chair that got passed around at a friend's one (Goodwill purchase) and legit smelled like it was in a 70s tour bus for Willie Nelson.

Omg!!!!
We have a decorative plate from greece that is super ugly that gets passed around!

Holy sh*t. Gross. That aquarium looks like it has seen better days. I hope the rat doesn't chew through those wires and the rusty aquarium and escape! Ick.
I got this Chuck Norris calendar. My husband got an $80 bluetooth speaker. The spending limit was $20 but someone went a bit crazy on a few gifts she brought with her...

Not exactly white elephant, but the year we moved in together my uncle got us A Major Award (the leg lamp!) as a house warming gift. I have it to my brother when he got his first apt, then I found it in my Xmas decorations box the next year. Then I have it to my sister, and my cousin, back to my brother. I even put it in my other uncles bag when they bought a new house.
The damn thing haunts me. Every single year the damn lamp is in my Xmas decorations box. I really don't know how it gets there. I didn't put it there. No one comes to visit me. It's like an ugly ghost.

@T.H.O.U.: @Mrs. Blue: I've never seen a living animal given, that's kind of upsetting. Those poor animals do you know what happened to the animals after?

OMG what is someone going to do with a live rat? That is horrifying!
P.S. You look great! Hope this pregnancy is treating you well!

The guy that got it is a teacher and the science teacher at his school agree to keep it for the kids to watch.

@twodoghouse: there was a lively debate about what to do with it, but it found a home at a school.

WTF. Who gifts a live animal as a joke?! That makes me super sad.

@Mrs. Blue: oh that makes me feel better! sounds like it (i don't mean to call the rat an 'it', i don't know if it's a 'he' or a 'she') will get lots of love!

@Synchronicity: I think the couple who brought it would have taken it home for their kids if whoever got it hadn't actually found a home for it. We did add a rule for next year: No live animals.

That is gross!
I'm confused by the premise of this. Are the gifts supposed to be ridiculous?

@Mrs. Blue: Haha, that's a rule I would never have thought would be necessary. I'm glad the rat found a good home, I was worried at first. Pets aren't toys or presents, they're family members! Now your shirt, on the other hand, is a pretty epic Christmas present

@Mrs. Blue: Glad he (she?) is going to be well taken care of!
@regberadaisy: Yes! Well, at least in my group of friends things can get pretty weird.

I think that is kind of horrible. (That someone brought a live animal.) I hate white elephant and secret santa and whatever the one is where you can take the present from someone else. We had to do it in college and I'll never do it again! People got into huge fights! Yes adults. Oh, and while I was working at the same institution they made us do secret santa and I got a passive aggressive gift! I was like wtf? Why? To each their own, I suppose. I love the unicorn santa shirt though!

@regberadaisy: yeah, the basic premise (at least at this party) is: if you come home liking what you got, someone didn't understand the concept.

First off the live rat is crazy. But I really do have to commend you for rocking that awesome shirt haha

@Mrs. Blue: I'm glad it found a home, but it still makes me a little ragey that they bought an animal on a whim for a Christmas gift exchange. Too many animals get purchased as gifts and then abandoned a few months later, especially at this time of year.

The best gift this year was a bottle of bourbon and some bourbon barrel cake. The kookiest gift was a boomerang. I got letterpress recipe cards.

@mrs. bird: The gold fish went home with a little boy and was used as a pet. It didn't require a big aquarium or anything like that, just a bowl of water. And the gift givers were nice and also included some fish food.

@MapleMoose: at first, I had this amazing tie-dye shirt with a giant cat face right where my belly would be. I was actually disappointed to have someone steal that little piece of amazingness, so the Christmas unicorn was a nice consolation prize.
