My OB prefers to insert them while you're on your period (both because it better rules out any pregnancy and also should help with pain upon insertion). I *believe* (but can't remember with 100% certainty that I was on my period both times I had my IUD placed.

I've done it twice and wasn't on my period either time. It was a while ago now but I don't think it was even brought up as being preferred timing.

@mrskansas: are you thinking about doing it when af shows up?

@mrskansas: I can see the appeal ... we typically use barrier method and I can see "taking a break" turning into "oh let's just try and see"

They preferred to do it during a period, but if you haven't had a pp cycle, they would do it whenever after 8 weeks pp (8 weeks? 6 weeks? There was a certain time they waited until.
