We are trying to get my 2yr, 9mo old son toilet trained over the holidays - we had planned to do a few days at home, then away on a holiday to a beach shack, and persist over christmas/new year. Unfortunately, the "beach shack" we rented on airbnb turned out to be a newly renovated house with all new carpets and furniture, and we didn't feel right about doing any training there because of potential accidents. Also, the first 2 days had been stressful and we decided we wanted to enjoy our holiday before the stress of the christmas period.

So we are on day 2 of try #2 and so far it has been a hellish disaster. My son has not really done anything significant in the toilet, and actually seems to have developed a bit of a fear now (just of pee so far - not even mentioning poo yet). Everything culminated in Christmas morning this morning where there was tearful resistance by him to sitting on the toilet, and tears (hidden) from me about possibly ruining his happy memories of Christmas.

He seems like he is afraid to pee in the toilet - he dances around and grabs himself (and drinks a ton so I know he's got a full bladder) but if we ask him to sit on the toilet he'll sit for literally 1/2 a second and say "I did a wee already" even though he hasn't. He gets off, and does a HUGE pee in his underwear on the floor. Sometimes I can catch him and put him back on in time to catch the end of the pee, but usually not.

Since we are only 2 days into the second attempt, I don't know if I should put the diapers back on and try again in a month, or persist. We have nothing major planned between now and new years so we can keep going and stay close to home, but I just don't know.

What would you do? Those who have been there before, is it worth persisting? My son has been an easy baby and kid and I honestly think this might be the hardest thing we've dealt with!

Thanks for any advice!
