I need a new passport and Sadie needs her first passport, so I'm starting to collect the paperwork we need. The current plan is to leave the second weekend in June - so, about 7 weeks. I'd prefer not to pay the rush fee, but I want to make sure they're here on time. If you got a passport recently, what was the turn around time? The website says 4-6 weeks, but I'm wondering how accurate that is.

I'd like to know this too! We're going to be getting a passport for LO ASAP after he is born, since we'd like to take a trip abroad at about 4mo.

I want to say the turnaround time was fairly accurate.
BUT, if it's getting close to the deadline and you're worried about getting it in time, you can always call and add the rush on after wards. It sucks if you've already waited 5 weeks and then feel like you have to do that, but it guarantees you'll get it in time!

I live in a city with a passport office so it took less than 2 weeks. That was in 2010.

We got ours last fall within 4 weeks I believe (and the quoted timeframe was about 4-6 weeks then) so I do agree that it is pretty accurate, however, you are cutting it a little close so if you are worried about them running late, I would pay the extra rush fee.
Oh, just saw what Adira wrote that you can add it later if necessary. That is what I would do!

@photojane: Are you sure you have to pay extra? In Michigan we are allowed to do the rush service (without fee) if we go straight to the headquarters (about 45 mins from my house) and if we show proof of travel within 2 weeks (ticket stub).
It took like 4h but I got my passport same day and I was 11 days away from an overseas trip. -
When we got LO's last year, it took about 4-5 weeks.

I actually sent my renewal application in very early March and just got it back about 2 weeks ago (mailed in from Atlanta, processed in Charleston). So I would say 6 weeks was fairly accurate, but it could have been a few days more so it may be safer to expedite yours... They cashed my check very early and then took a good 3+ weeks to actually mail the passport back.

I applied for mine and E's late last fall and received them in less than 2 weeks.

When I changed my name, I got my new one back within 3 weeks. I think there is a way to track the status on their website, so as @adira said you could always call if it was getting close and try to rush it. I believe they would also put an alert out there if for some reason it would be longer than 6 weeks. I think you are fine to do the regular speed.

I'd say it usually takes about a month if everything is in order... However if any information is missing or something it could easily take longer.

I got mine after I changed my name at the end of 2012 and I think it took about 2-3 weeks

Someone at work just went to DC and got it that day. I don't know how that works but perhaps something to look into if you need it quickly since you're not too far.

we did normal processing through usps and got passports for the kids within 3-4 weeks. our local post office requires an appt and both parents have to be present when applying, so I would keep that in mind!

Ours took about 8 weeks, but we had to resubmit a photo because the first one wasn't right. (I was super annoyed because we had the pic done at the post office and they should know the exact requirements!)

DS's took about a month to arrive.
Since we live abroad now, DD's US passport took only one week!

Not exactly relevant, but we're currently seven weeks into our 'six week wait' for our girls' passports. Yes, they're UK passports and not US, so not exactly the same situation, but if it says 4-6 weeks and you want to travel in 7 weeks, I'd pay the expediting fee. We're going to have to change all of our flights now as our stupid passports aren't coming back quick enough, boo.
Can you tell I am super grumpy about this?!?

We just submitted applications for DS and I. His came back wishing two weeks but I am still waiting for mine. I had to submit an extra form because I lost my last one and was changing my name so I guess it's taking longer because of those things.
