I just found out my TSH level is 5.3 so my primary care wants to put me on meds. It was 4.3 with my daughter and I never went on meds. She called after my OBs office was closed so I didn't get to run it by my OB. Does anyone have experience with higher TSH levels? I am starting to panic, but don't know if I should be. I am 5 weeks ...

I have my thyroid regulated with meds anyway, but i was on a higher dose when pregnant. My doctor prefers levels between 1-2 and would definitely have me on meds at that level. Have you had a full thyroid screening?

@Mrs. Lion: I had T4 tested with my daughter and it was normal. I'm honestly not sure if I had that tested today! My doctor was talking so fast and my daughter was shrieking so I kind of rushed off the phone. I am going to find out tomorrow. I guess my question is that if my other levels are okay would I still be put on meds? I was reading that hcg can effect your TSH levels, but I'm not sure by how much. I don't know if it matters, but my levels were back to normal at my 6 week pp check up which was a year ago.

Don't panic! My TSH was 3-something and my doctor wanted to keep it under 2 for my pregnancy. She said there's a lot of emerging research that shows that lower TSH levels lead to healthier pregnancies and babies. I took a very low dose of synthroid through my pregnancy, and had my TSH checked every month. My pregnancy was otherwise smooth sailing, and I discontinued the synthroid after I gave birth. She put me on a low dose of levothyroxine. Some whacko on the internet said once you start taking thyroid meds, you have to take them for life. I didn't believe that, but I'm glad you just confirmed, haha. I should stop googling. Did you have the full screening or just TSH?

@ocean81: Just TSH and T4 (which was normal). They did check my TSH again 6 weeks after I stopped the synthroid - I was fine but I guess you could still have borderline high TSH, requiring continued use of meds.

Before getting pregnant I went on Levothyroxine & while pg increased my dosage. At 6wks pp I stopped the meds, but by ~6mos I went back on low dose. Most often they've checked TSH, but if that's high, they then check T4. I was under the care of both a PCP & my OB over the course of my hypothyroidism. I now get checked 2x yr.
