My MIL has been sick for over a week with the flu and pneumonia. She posted on Facebook on Monday that she was still recovering. I had a baby on Tuesday and she wants to come visit this weekend. I'm inclined to say she needs to be symptom free for two weeks before she comes to visit? She should stay away for now, right?

@brady80: OMG CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I'm so happy for you! Yes, absolutely tell you MIL that being around the baby is out of the question!!! I wouldn't let someone that had recently had flu OR pneumonia around my kids, much less someone who had BOTH and wanted to be around my newborn! You are totally right

She should definitely not visit. Pull the 'pediatrician's orders' card on her, if necessary. No pediatrician is going to say 'Sure, expose a newborn to the flu and pneumonia.'
To soften the blow and maybe make her more reasonable, I would tell her that I'd be happy to flood her email with pics and videos while she recovers. Be sympathetic, but firm.

Yep she should stay away! I haven't requested it just yet to my ILs (I already have with my parents), but I am going to ask them to get immunized before the baby arrives.

@brady80: Congrats! I agree with the other ladies, no visit until she is recovered. My aunt and uncle were both sick with pneumonia and bronchitis when their granddaughter was born and now the baby is back in the hospital at 3 weeks old because she has RVS
and had to have a spinal tap because of the fever...I am not suggesting that it is their fault because I wasn't there/don't know all the details but it is not worth the risk to me

I agree with everyone else that she should stay away until she feels better. However, I think that two weeks of being symptom free may be a bit excessive. I would be comfortable with maybe 48 hours symptom free (and have the sanitizer ready)!

Could you arrange a Facetime/Skype with her so that she can "meet" the baby that way in the short term while she's making sure that she's entirely germ free?

You could ask your pediatrician. (We weren't sure about some visits from sick friends when our LO's were very small, and so I asked my mother who is a pediatrician. She was able to tell me likely contagious periods, how much of a risk she thought it was, and good strategies for preventing spread of illness.)

@Lilbear: Agreed! She should definitely wait until she is better before meeting your LO. But two weeks symptom-free is way excessive in my book.
