It's been hot out lately so I've been keeping the windows open (no one really has AC in the Seattle area since it never gets that hot). Our neighbors (who are renters) are constantly smoking pot...as in all day. My house smells like it whenever the window are open and I don't want my LO's to breathe it in. There are about 15 people living in the house and 10 of them are children under the age of 8. I don't know whether to call the police or let them be?
What would you do?

every apartment we've lived in, we've had weed smoking neighbors. the smell was coming in through olive's fireplace this past christmas, so i sealed the fireplace up! luckily it was only a one time thing at this apartment.
i would knock on the door and talk to them.

If I call the police, those children could lose their parents if the go to jail? Ugh. My husband thinks I'm being heartless. We live in a nice neighborhood so if I don't report it, someone else probably will soon.

We had this problem in our last apartment. My husband just told them that I was pregnant and the smell was making me nauseous (okay, they didn't need to know that I was in my 2nd tri and it didn't really! But we didn't want to lecture about the dangers of smoke inhalation.)

@HeatherlovesKenny: I would think that the children would be better off without those parents smoking weed in front of them 24/7 as you said. I'm sure they aren't giving them much attention or taking care of them as they should be.

Oh my goodness-report it. I would. I don't think talking to them is going to make them give up weed. That's absurd that people who have young kids would even be doing that crap around them!
I had weed smoking neighbors in my college apartment but I never reported because I didn't have kids and neither did they.

I'd feel more comfortable confronting them if they were harmless hippies. Which we had the in the last place we lived. But like I said, they're intimidating...to say the least.
Off subject but the house is tiny...15 people in about 1400 sqft is nuts. I couldn't imagine.

also, i think there's some sort of code about how many people can permanently live in a house...? at least there is in virginia!

If you'd rather not talk face to face with them, you could always mail them a letter saying that if they don't stop within a week, you'll call the police and social services?

Is there any way you could write an anonymous letter to their landlord? I mean, I understand that some people smoke pot the way others will have a drink or two in the evening, but all day is ridiculous, especially when it's affecting the whole neighborhood, AND they have a bunch of kids? If you can't contact the landlord, I guess I would report them to the police.

I had a verrry similar situation, my neighbors were smoking weed on their balcony at least twice a day and have children who would sometimes sit out there with them while they smoked (!!). I didn't want to be the cause for tearing up a family so I just called the apartment manager and let her know. She talked to them so they knew it was wrong but no cops had to come.

@photojane: I would think so too. Originally there were only 5 (I think?) living there and then we starting noticing more people over who we thought were just friends or family but they've stayed for a few months now.
@mrbee: I'll probably do this...I don't want to be a jerk and overreact. We have just noticed how strong it is within the past week.
@Foodnerd81: I looked up the tax assessor to find the land lord's name then googled it but nothing in my area came up. I was hoping to find a number or e-mail, something. I did find out the property is being foreclosed on so I'm not sure if the land lord cares anymore.

Blech, I hate the smell of weed! A grow house just popped up about a block down the street from me, and they vent at night when all of us are home with the windows open. Ugh, I hate it.
Anyway, I would call the police. If there's that many people smoking that much weed, there's a good chance they're growing, too, which can cause a lot of unsafe living conditions.
