My son is turning 2 in a few weeks, and I want to get him some kind of blocks or building toy for his birthday. We don't currently own any megabucks, duplos, etc. so starting at square one. I want something he can play with now relatively easily, so I'm not sure if something like magnatiles are too advanced. Suggestions?

I would suggest Duplos and/or magnatiles. Both have gotten a lot of use in our house.

Love duplos. Also the plain wooden blocks )we have a big bucket of colored ones) get a lot of use too!

My 2-1/2 year old loves his duplo legos. We have the mega blocks also and he never really plays with those.

My just turned 2 year old loves stacking pegs. She likes Duplos but these keep her attention much longer and she can do them herself without any help. My son plays with Duplos every single day. This is one of our favorite sets.

Another vote for duplos; I think megabloks are more for 1-2.
DD also likes tegu blocks over magnatiles.

My son was really into Duplos, he had a train set extension and he still plays with it to this day (he's 6).
Magnatiles were meh for him, he also didn't really care for the Tegu blocks he was gifted either. I think it's because we had smaller sets.

My DS started on magnatiles when he was 18 months old. The great thing with magnatiles is you can build out and just do 2D builds or build up and make towers/buildings.
Duplos are better than mega bloks at this age. The daycare people tell me he can play with them for 30 minutes straight!
@looch: i did not like the Tegu blocks either and i felt they were a waste of money.

We have both MegaBlocks and Magnatiles and DS1 has had them since like 16 months old. Until he turned 2 he was mostly smashing the structures DH and I would make for him, but now he's making really cool stuff and has been since about 2 years old.

Another vote for Duplos. They have a surprisingly long lifespan. My son (6, nearly 7) still uses them fairly regularly to build bigger stuff, even though most of his Lego time is spent on regular Legos now.
And plain old wooden blocks are great too. They're more frustrating for very young toddlers, however, because structures fall over much more easily.
