When I was growing up, my mom would make me a Duncan Hines birthday cake with green pistachio frosting. We had it every single year, and so now that flavor has such a strong memory! One year I asked Bee to make me a Duncan Hines cake with green pistachio frosting and it pretty much felt exactly like this:

I had at home parties. Pizza, chips, soda, candy, fruit, cake! We decorated with streamers and balloons and always had a great time.

I only had a few parties so not many memories! We had a family dinner and cake.

I had some really good/interesting birthday parties growing up, but when they happened was pretty inconsistent. Some years, it was super small/our immediate family only/barely a cake or a mention happened. And other years, I had huge planned parties. No rhyme or reason as to when I'd get which (except, probably the years we didn't do anything were years my parents were super busy with life).
My mom was very creative with parties, so I'd like to replicate that a bit as the girls get older. I had a Barbie costume party (come as your favorite Barbie--this was the 80's), a Dukes of Hazard party, a party where my mom took me and 8 of my 3rd grade friends all super dressed up to a fancy restaurant at the top of the Bank of America building, where we had some dessert that was set on fire, and a giant rented country club party with indoor tennis and pools and hot tubs in Middle School.
And then some years, I got a candle stuck in a frozen Honey Bun (btw--I love honey buns, haha).

I only ever had one birthday party and I was only allowed to invite two friends. How tragic is that?! We had ham sandwiches, followed by jelly and ice cream. I was 7.

My mom is all about birthdays so even if we didn't have a party that year it was always a really special day. We didn't have a lot of money but my mom would do everything in her power to make it magical. Birthdays were the best.

@Cherrybee: yikes, I'm sorry... I hope you get to make up for it now (if you like birthday parties, that is!)
I remember the couple of times my parents had me invite kids to the party. Can't remember whose idea it was, but the awkwardness of deciding who to invite, and actually asking them to come! And on top of that, one of the kids showed up with an incredibly embarrassing present his mom picked out (undies - whyyyy?!) I didn't dare have another party that wasn't family only till I was in my 20s.

We had small at home parties every year but one year my mom let me have it at Burger King!!! Man that was the best!

I specifically remember one at home and one at church (which was a school so had it in the gym/indoor playground area). We never spent a ton of money or had anything extravagant but I remember my mom really making it fun!

We were only allowed one party where we invited friends. Mine was in the 2nd grade and we went to a place where you made tshirts by putting dots of paint on the shirt and then they spin it so that the paint spreads. Otherwise, birthdays meant you got to pick where you wanted to eat out and then we had pie. We aren't a cake family.

I don't remember having a real party until I turned 30. I had a huge first birthday, so they say but I don't have any picture proof.

My mom used to make the best cakes. Not compared to now a days cakes, but everything she did was shaped by hand, and hand drawn. Really awesome stuff. Plus she's wrap money in tinfoil and make them 'money cakes.'

My brother and I share the same exact birthday, just 4 years apart (same month and day), so I always expected to have 1 big cake (a half sheet) split in half for "his and her" bdays. Think I finally got my own cake when I was 16, maybe?

My sister and I had fantastic birthday parties. They weren't anything fancy- just a bunch of girls over to our house for a sleepover with pizza, dips, chips and candy, cake and my grandma would make her famous cookies. When we were younger, my mom would have a craft for us to do and as we got older, we just all hung out in our sleeping bags talking. I had one every year from maybe 3rd grade until senior year. Friends still talk about them

I have lots of fun birthday memories! One of my earliest memories is of my 4th or 5th birthday - it was a fancy tea party and my mom let us use real dishes in the formal dining room which was a BIG DEAL.
I remember the fun cakes my mom made - always some Disney character! The Pocahontas figurine kept falling over on I think my 8th birthday and I cried while my mom and aunt laughed, haha!
When I was in middle school I would make my own invitations on the computer (Word Art is kewl) and have sleepovers. Lots of fun!

Birthday parties involved inviting some friends over for a party. There would be cake and usually some balloons. We'd play a couple party games, have cake, open presents and play. When I got older it was usually a sleepover with a few friends.
