We waited a long time for our eldest, but apparently now the American Dental Association is ok with fluoride as early as 2 years old! Once we heard that, we started our daughter on fluoride toothpaste - at least, at night. In the mornings, we're often in a hurry so we use the toothpaste that they don't have to spit out.
When did your LO start using fluoride in their toothpaste?

Huh. We've used fluoride at our dentist's direction since 6ish months. But we don't have fluoride in our water.

@Jess1483: Ah my dentist said that the ADA recommended parents wait til their kids were two? Not sure how to reconcile that article with their website!

@mrbee: Yeah, I saw that, too, so I'm super confused. But I think it has quite a bit to do with whether or not you have fluoridated water.
We've always been told to use a "smear," or drop the size of a grain of rice, which seems in line with most of the recommendations.

To make this even more confusing, our ped and our ped dentist told us to let our kiddo swallow the toothpaste so he gets a mix of "systemic" and "topical" (which the ADA also suggests). But again, no fluoride in our water.

@Jess1483: Our dentist said that it's ok to swallow fluoride toothpaste even at age two, because the dosage is fairly low and is considered safe! But he could have just been making that up, so who knows.

Our pediatric dentist recommended we use regular toothpaste with fluoride after her first appointment at 15 months.

Our dentist just gave us the ok at 20 months, but to use a rice sized amount only.

We just started at 3, but so far he is swallowing it even when we tell him not to repeatedly. So switching back and forth.
