Such a dreaded question and I don't get why people need to stick their most where it doesn't belong...how did you answer if people ask you something about how your pregnancy could be a surprise if you weren't using birth control?
I know breastfeeding isn't a fool proof method but someone already said to me, "well it shouldn't have been a surprise then!"

Lame. Tell them it was a surprise because you had a newborn, were exhausted and weren't having sex. Some drive by sperm decided to jump off of your husband and on to you. In fact, it was a miracle when you really think about it! That should shut them up

in my previous life as a dimwit, i once asked an acquaintance when they were thinking of having a baby (i know, so bad!). she looked at me and said "that's a little personal, isn't it?" that taught me a lesson. i didn't feel like she was being bitchy or anything--i deserved it! maybe you could say something similar and direct. it really is none of their business and there's no reason for you to sugar coat it.
or, something like "what they say about not getting pregnant from sitting on a toilet seat? so not true!!" and then laugh maniacally.

I can't believe people actually would ask that. I like the idea of a straightforward answer that puts them in their place, but I'm too much of a people pleaser to do it, probably. You could just say you didn't expect it would happen so soon and leave it at that.

@Edelweiss: I had a similar experience in middle school. People were talking about a girl who wasn't in the room, and a friend spoke up and said, "Don't you think we're being a little harsh?" It wasn't judgmental or mean, but it was very effective and true. I love people who can be straight-forward like that--so refreshing!

It's none of their business, but if you're telling them it was a surprise you may be emboldening them by making them think it's their business! So maybe don't say it was a surprise?

And seriously, there are people that don't use hormonal bc at all.... That doesn't mean we're always actively ttc though. Pfft
We actually got asked the opposite since P is only 15 mths. Why would we "plan" a child that close? Ugh people just need to shut their face!

Ugh we've gotten a lot of this question. I always say "We've always wanted our children to be pretty close in age." I leave it at that. That way I don't really answer their question either way but let them know that yes, we're happy about this!

@matador84: I just wouldn't say it was a surprise to begin with.. It kind of invites "we're you on bc/what kind of bc?" an the question you mentioned.

@matador84: Sweet Jesus I can't believe someone has the nerve. No one has asked this even though I've indicated that we were surprised. Though my dad has cackled several times about "Well, you know what causes that, right?" Har har har. I grit my teeth and tune it out.

It always surprises me the invasive questions people ask. Why does it matter if I was on birth control, or if we were trying, or what the definition of "trying" is to you? I'm pregnant, we're having the baby, we're excited, and I'm not 16 or anything. Just be happy for me!

@matador84: yeah that's rude but unfortunately not really unexpected... I'm one of those people who would then ask why they want to know and make them feel awkward depending on the person.. But that's just me! Or I'd just say it wasnt a surprise and not give them the opportunity to tell me it shouldn't be a surprise.

People can be so rude some times. I had a male co worker ask me how I made twins. After he didn't take my answer of "the good old fashion way" he continued. I gave him a "are you serious look" and asked if he was done asking questions about my reproductive system. He was embarrassed and quit. Some times you just have to be as blunt as they are
