My parents are pretty frugal and luckily I picked that up as a kid. Beyond that though, I just got lucky... college back then didn't cost as much as it does now, and the economy was doing ok when I graduated so I was able to get a job.

I'm amazed that schools don't teach the basics, like how to set a budget (and stick to it), the importance of savings, the dangers of debt... that stuff seems way more important to me than chemistry and physics! My parents did all those things, but I guess it was invisible to me and so I learned those lessons on my own later in life.
