Especially in Toronto? Everyone wants photos, but you can get stills from HD videos. Is birth videography really that obsolete?! Most birth videos I've seen are also super long. The actual birth is about halfway through a 10 minute video.
All I'm looking for is like a 3 - 5 min length with stills. But there is no one in the Toronto area!!

Not sure there are specific birth videographers but you might just know an aspiring photographer or art student who could do it. What about a family member? IMHO, I don't think 10 minutes is terribly long, but I am sure they could edit it however you would want.

Somebody probably doesn't want to be there that long to do a 5 min video. The demand is probably very low since birth is long

A lot of doctors don't allow video as it opens them up to liability if something goes wrong. My DH wasn't allowed to film or take photos until LO was out.

@lawbee11: Yep. Many hospitals have a policy that photos/video are allowed before pushing and once the baby is out, but not for the actual birth, so if that's the only portion you're wanting recorded you might be out of luck.
@blackbird: This too. Birth is so unpredictable and if you only want 3-5 minutes at the end captured, it's unlikely a videographer would be willing to hang out for hours just for that. Birth photographers are a little different because they usually capture the whole labor and take some brand new baby pics.

What about hiring a doula who can take some video/pics and also coach you through laboring?

Sorry, I should clarify, I wanted a 3 - 5 minute edited video. I would not expect a videographer to just be there for 5 minutes.
Just so hard to find ANYONE that does birth videography, in Canada. Definitely nothing in the Toronto areas from my searches. So I wonder if those no vid policies apply to Toronto hospitals?.

I'm a birth photographer. I wouldn't pull stills from a video, because of quality issues. But yeah, I could not find a videographer for our birth. I really wanted one, but no dice. It's hard! I wish there were more out there, because I LOVE watching birth videos. (Is that weird?)

@stiletto_mom: that's still pretty short but what if you reached out to some wedding videographers? They know people in the business or might be interested in it themselves

@stiletto_mom: have you tried reaching out to the birth worker community in your area? Doulas/prenatal educators etc? They might know someone. If Toronto doesn't have it, it probably doesn't exist!

@stiletto_mom: not sure about videographers, but I know the hospital I delivered at didn't allow filming.

I also wanted birth videography, but I hired a birth photographer only because creating quality photo is much harder than taking quality video.
A pretty decent video can be taken from a tripod - a video still (regardless of the video quality) is never going to compare to a photo by a quality photographer. Light, composition - so much of what makes a good photo comes from the skill of the photographer.
OP, I would definetly ask doulas in your area. Some may offer videography as part of their package, or be able to direct you to a videographer.
