@snowjewelz: We used to get the belgian chocolate paper ones that have scripture behind each paper door. I love the one that Mrs. Train posted though.

I have a cute wooden Advent calendar we will use. Last year it just turned into little notes with a fun activity to do. We also have an advent book that you read a story each night which takes you through the story of christmas through a little bear.

We've done it all the other years, but this year we're spending Christmas at my mom's house, which requires a whole day of travel. I decided on a Lego Advent Set. It's one of those boxes where you open a gift every day. Easy. Plus, I hated how she was expecting real gifts everyday last year. She'll be 4.5 this year and so we're working on patience and "not getting everyone you want". Which will only hold until we arrive at my mom's

Bumping this up, as we've begun our calendar.
I got my son the Lego one, and at first, he did say he thought it was a kit for one big thing and he was disappointed, but the items that are in it are cool, such as a snowmobile, an amplifier for a band, etc. He's waking up in a good mood each day to do his item and I'd say it's a hit!

We have the Thomas Minis one which is actually not as big a hit as I'd hoped. My son opens it, is excited for a minute, and then abandons the train to do something else. I also did a book Advent calendar which has been a bigger hit, he gets excited to unwrap the books and then we read them four or five times in a row.

@looch: we have this one too and DS LOVES it! It's the very first thing he wants to do every morning.

We have always done chocolate calendars for ourselves, and weren't sure what to do about DD this year since she's old enough to know what's going on but (...arguably) not old enough to be eating chocolate every day. Well we caved and bought her a chocolate calendar. So far we've only let her have one chocolate which she LOVED and immediately asked for more. So I think we probably will just do it every few days or once a week for her, and "Santa" will eat the rest.

We have a little one that is like the one I had growing up. it's a tree with 24 slots. It's at the bottom of the stairs and our daughter loves to pick out the "ornament" for each day. It's made of felt and other fabrics.
