We are going to do the book advent calendar this year! Just for 12 days though, not 24. Not sure how well that will go over with just one book being opened per night with 2 kids, but we will give it a try!

I bought an advent calendar from PB Kids last year and we'll do it again this year. I plan on tucking in either a small treat or a slip of paper with an activity that we can do.

We will! I try and find ways to celebrate the liturgical calendar with them, so we have lots of Advent traditions I'm looking forward to celebrating out again!

Last year we bought a Lego advent calendar, which was a lot of fun. Plan on doing it again this year.

Yes. DS has one my Oma made with pockets and a little bear to move each day.
This year I got some thomas minis on sales, so that will be half the days and the other half will be treats.

If I can find the Lego advent calendar this year, we might do that.

@jhd: Oh, my son would kill for this! I wonder if I can find one in Canada?

@youboots: do you buy them all new? I have 12 new but probably can't swing 24!

@erinbaderin: I tried to look if it was available from Fisher Price in Canada, but I think my location on my phone was messing it up! It's either going to be the best idea or the worst if he decides he doesn't want to wait and open each on the correct day.

@Bao: what if you got some Christmas themed books from the library? just remember which ones are library books so you can open them early on and return them. or just other books that are winter themed? i need to see how many Christmas books we have, because i'd like to try it this year too.

I would love to get a little people advent calendar for LO but can't find it anywhere (well Amazon for $150) 🙄
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Yep, we will do one this year since we'll be home for the holidays.
I need to figure out what to put in them though, because they are hand knit socks, mittens and hats....so the contents need to be on the small side.
On the lego advent calendar, is it one big set that has been broken down? Maybe I could make my own?
grapefruit / 4988 posts
I want to get one this year. Growing up, we had one with a little mouse that you moved to a new square each day as a countdown. I'd like to find one of those if I can. So far, I've only been able to find the ones that you have to fill up with toys though.

DS LOVES playmobil, so I think we are going to do the Playmobil 123 advent calendar.

@Bao: I bought some used on Amazon but I knew I wanted to do it so I started collecting in March when T was born and my MIL got us a few. They are all in our Christmas box.

@jhd: Fisher Price directly didn't occur to me, I'll check there! Thanks!

@looch: The lego calendars are little pieces each day. They make a star wars, lego city and a friends one. We usually get the star wars one and each day is either a mini figure or a small version of the ships and things like that. So it doesn't make a big set it has a bunch of small pieces to make a miniature play set.

I was looking into it, but not sure if my not quite 2 year old would understand... I also just don't want a cutesy/toy calendar since we are religious. I guess I'll do it if I find the right one!

@snowjewelz: we have this one and my kids have loved it since they were little. Each day you pull out a piece of the nativity scene and on the 24th its baby Jesus. They are magnetic so they can move them around easily. It is a favorite of ours.

@Mrs. Train: So cute!! Wow, it's so expensive! But I guess if you can re-use it year after year... But this is exactly along the lines of what I'm looking for!

@Mrs. Train: Hrm, I am going to think about what to do now! I originally thought I would dole out pieces of a set, but now I want to get one of those boxed sets.

@looch: here's one that I was looking at. There's also a Star Wars one. I think they are fun since there are some unique pieces in it.
blogger / pomegranate / 3300 posts
@snowjewelz: I bought it at a store and I want to say it was like 40$ so you can find it cheaper. I just linked to amazon because it was fast. It is nice because we use the same one every year. Even now at 7 and 8 my kids still love it.
@looch: they are fun. We have gotten the star wars one for a few years but now my daughter wants the friends one. I have to figure out which one to get.

We usually do the chocolate ones. I love the idea of the Lego ones but for the price I'm not sure how good of a deal it is. LO loves getting a chocolate every day so we will probably just stick to that for now.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I ordered the Lego City one, I hope my son likes it, lol. I was surprised my husband thought it was a good idea.

@Mrs. Train: @snowjewelz: I like Mrs. Train's version! We do the same sort of thing with a regular nativity. Our set has a bunch of little pieces, so I get out one or two items at a time (as long as I remember to get them out of the closet!), culminating with Jesus on Christmas Eve. Oh, and the wise men don't show up until Epiphany, but we set them up somewhere else in the house on Christmas and LO moves them a little closer to the nativity until then.
We also do an Advent wreath and have Jesse tree ornaments that we put on our regular tree.

@Bao: we did the book thing. I had about 1-12 and I borrowed more from the ibrary. The kids were fine taking turns opening the book and we read together before bed.

@catlady: We totally had that mouse calendar. I think my childhood cat "got" the mouse, though!
Eeek I have thought ahead to a lot of holidays, but not about our advent calendar. We'll see how crazy life is a month from now....we may just do the magnetic Melissa & Doug tree, and not fill our big tree with little drawers. Or if I fill the tree, I might just do candies/stickers (nothing terribly creative).

We will do the 24 books, I have managed to accumulate close to 24 at this point although some aren't exactly stellar literature so I'll work on replacing them once we officially have 24, I supplement with library books. I totally count winter themed books though so stuff like Snowy Day is in my box etc.
I kind of want to do either a playmobil or schleich one too but I'm thinking it's too much between the books and elf on the shelf.

A book Advent calendar sounds so cute!!! I made one last year and we tucked a little treat and a Bible verse into each one. DD absolutely loved it so we will do that again this year.
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
We just do one where you open doors to find a picture. I buy one that has a little story that we read and add to each day.

Excuse my ignorance. What is the advent calendar and who typically does it? Is it catholic?
pomelo / 5573 posts
@tequiero21: An Advent calendar is basically a countdown to Christmas, where every day you open a little door (or something) and there's a treat. Originally I think they were mostly chocolate-based but now you can get them with all sorts of things. I get a tea calendar every year. You can buy them pre-made or a reusable one that you can put your own candy or toys into. They're pretty secular, I don't think associated with any particular religion.

@erinbaderin: thx for your response! We've never done that growing up but I know some people observe advent by fasting so I thought it was related lol.

@Mrs. Train: That is the one I wanted and was sitting in my Amazon cart for multiple years!
