I prefer our set-up. Laundry room upstairs near our master bedroom. Don't have to move the laundry up and down stairs!

Of your 3 choices, I'd go with the basement. However, our laundry is on the 2nd floor, in a closet in the hallway in the middle of the 3 bedrooms, and it's thebomb.com. I'll never go back.

ours is in the mud room, which is on the first floor off the garage. I love it there even though there's no space to fold or anything. the machines are big enough and we do laundry constantly so there's never a build up or anything. when we first bought our house, the laundry was in the basement, but we promptly bought machines that would fit in the mudroom, because the basement seemed like too much of a pain (but, as I said, we do laundry very frequently so having it close by was a necessity). I generally fold it upstairs before putting it away.

I voted powder room. Ours is technially in our mudroom so we don't have much space. But I much prefer having it in our living area rather than in garage/basement.

I wouldn't want to bring some of the things I've had to wash near my bedroom, lol, so I voted basement laundry room.

I voted powder room. Ours is in our only full bathroom. It is big enough that I have space to sort piles etc. My parents had theirs in the basement and bedrooms on the second floor. It was always cold and annoying to do laundry. I much prefer it being on the first floor even if it is unsightly on laundry day.
Would there be space for a hamper it laundry sorter near the bathroom or in the bathroom? That might help for when you run out of steam. Other wise a basement laundry might work better for you.

I voted basement, because I feel like the powder room would always be messy or have stuff drying everywhere and I like our guest areas to be neat-ish. I don't like garages so I guess I would vote basement, especially if it is partially finished because then if the LOs are down there playing you can sit and fold and do laundry while they are in there. Just seems more practical than hanging out in the garage. Plus I don't want my clean laundry in the garage, that seems spidery and dusty to me.

I'm in New Zealand and most new builds have their laundry in the garage because most families line dry their washing and it provides easy access to the washing line!

I guess I would rather in the powder room, less walking. I've had it in the kitchen before.
At this point I'd just be happy to stop having shared laundry though.

@2littlepumpkins: I know what you mean! Our current laundry is the smallest size available, by before it was shared with our building, so huge step up.
If we did move it to the basement, it would when we finished the entire basement bits already half finished (complete with a 70s era bar no less...). So no misty basement laundry but still the extra stairs.

@Foodnerd81: basement! and install a laundry chute from the upper levels

I like ours on the first floor. Ours is more or less in the mudroom with a big closet and door out to the detached garage. We can close a door and not hear it washing the clothes.

I would do it in the basement, especially if it is partially/fully finished. I use a drying rack for a lot of stuff and leave it there for a week or more sometimes because I'm lazy, and it would bother me if it were always out on display in a powder room. I had laundry in a garage while I was in grad school and on the coldest days the pipes would freeze and you'd have to wait for it to warm up before doing laundry, so I vote definitely no on the garage!

@MediaNaranja: yeah we are in New England- too cold for garage I think!

I prefer it in the basement or on the first floor. But that's all I'm used to. Right now, it's in my kitchen/dining room and I don't have a place to hide my drying rack.

If those were my options I'd go with the basement laundry room. We currently have our laundry room upstairs with the bedrooms and I love it!
