I've been thinking of making my own laundry detergent to save money... If you do this, what recipe do you use? Do you love it?

I use this recipe:
1 box of Super Washing Soda
1 box of Baking Soda
1 box of Borax
3 bars of Kirk’s Castile soap–Shredded
(you can use Fels Naptha, Zote, or Ivory soaps)
Mix well in a large container.
Add two heaping tablespoons to each load of laundry.
I got a pretty glass jar and a 2 tbsp metal measuring spoon. I love the whole set up. I made the exact recipe above in February of last year and I have used it exclusively since and still have a ton left. That's a pretty good chunk of savings, I think! I suggest making it outside when it's not windy and using a plastic garbage bin or tub to mix it all together. You'll have a problem if you don't have a big enough container. I also just got a cheapy cheese grater and keep it with my supplies but obviously you could just use your regular one. Grating the soap was actually pretty fun. Our clothes smell good and fresh but not that artificial perfumey smell. They come just as clean as with commercial detergent.

We use soap nuts and bicarbonate of soda. Have a search for soap nuts and give them a try. They're one of nature's best kept secrets.

My tips: grate the soap smaller than that so it doesn't have a problem dissolving. I bought a small cheese grater (the kind with a crank that turns) to do this and it makes it easier to grate! A full batch lasts me about 10 months and it costs 20.00 to make
Oh, and I bought a large plastic cereal dispenser with a pour spout from walmart to put mine in and use one small scoop (the one that came in the oxyclean) per load. Now I make it in half batches because its easier (less volume to mix and less soap to grate) and am on our 3rd batch! My mom makes this now, too, after trying a little bit of mine!

I haven't tried this one but it only has 3 ingredients, seems pretty easy!

@JerricaBenton: I just made the same recipe. I think I added a container of Pyrex crystals and you can also add oxy clean. So far I like it and I'm going to make containers to give away for the holidays.

@JerricaBenton: can you get super washing soda and Castile soap at say, target? Or online?

@sorrycharlie: I actually got everything at Walmart (even the cute container and scoop!) except the Kirks soap. They didn't have it at Target or Walmart. They have it on Amazon - but I actually ended up finding it at Wegman's (grocery store - not sure if they are everywhere) in the health food section. You could check Whole Foods, too maybe.

@JerricaBenton: awesome! I totally avoid Walmart this time of year, lol, so maybe ill check out amazon. I do have a gallon cookie jar around here somewhere, last I knew!

@sorrycharlie: I could not find Washing Soda at Target or Walmart (may have missed it at Walmart though). I actually had to get it at Publix (our grocery store)>

Also, I used the Fels Napa and really liked it! I used my food processor to shred it quickly.

@Thehistoryofus: I couldn't find it at the Target by me, but at Wlamart everything was all lined up together in the detergent aisle - I laughed because it was like they knew I was coming!
