DD is 2.5 and has had a runny nose for a few days, but not even a week yet, with zero other symptoms. Today, daycare said they think I should take her to the doctor. I just spent the entire weekend with her, so I'm aware that her nose is runny, but to me, it doesn't merit a doctor visit. I've been treating her with the nasal spray the ped always recommends during cold season. Would you go to the doctor if daycare thought you needed to?

No, this makes me laugh that they would even suggest it. It's allergies or a little bit of a summer cold, it'll run it's course. If other symptoms come no then maybe, but a runny nose is a runny nose nothing they can do for it.

Wow, no. I'd ask the daycare specifically why they'd suggest that. Toddlers seem to have perpetual runny noses around here and our daycare would never even mention it.

No.DD2 had a runny nose for three straight months this winter. I only took her in when it was accompanied by more serious symptoms.

When I've called in the past for a cold they usually don't want to see them unless it's been 10+ days or they're wheezing. -
It would have to go on for much longer and be dark green for a runny nose to warrant a doctor's visit. Did they mention any other symptoms they were seeing?

@LuLu Mom: @catlady: @youboots: @oliviaoblivia: @travelgirl1: phew! Glad I'm not the only one. I just talked to another daycare mom who said she thinks they are overly precautious. Obviously, if I thought my child was actually ill, we would go to the doctor.

@PawPrints: he just said it was running a lot and was green. Well, I paid close attention and I only had to blow her nose twice between pickup and bedtime and nothing was green and there aren't any other symptoms.

Ummm no that seems silly to me! I would begrudgingly do it if they refused to take her back or sent her home for it. But if it was just a polite suggestion I'd ignore it.

I can't remember the last time my toddler didn't have a runny nose.

Heck No! I feel like a runny nose with no other symptoms especially if clear for a toddler is teeth, sinus, allergies......nothing that I would run to Dr. about, but if it were green, yellow or lasted with other symptoms then maybe

I wouldn't bring my child in for that. I will say that I have had DS teachers mention his constant runny nose and possible allergies often with the assumption that there is something wrong with him (his nose has pretty much been runny since birth). I finally brought him to see an allergist and he is allergic to dust! Go figure. We've made a concerted effort to minimize his exposure to dust and it has made a huge difference!

@lamariniere: No. A 2.5 year old with just a runny nose doesnt warrant a doctors visit in my book. Once they get past the infant stage I will only go to the doctor if there is a fever or some other very perisistent symptom

That's an odd suggestion, I would think they've seen their share of runny noses in the day care! If you haven't asked yet, maybe there's something else that makes them think she needs a checkup, like she's been cranky or not napping well...
