If you weren't going to be home during prime ToT hours, what would you do for the kids that may come by?
We're taking DS to a ToT event at our church tomorrow. We'll be gone from 6-8 then it's DS' bedtime. (And I think the "curfew" is 8 for ToT in our city). We're going to leave a bowl of candy out. (We don't get too many ToTers)
My friend said we shouldn't bother since the first kids are going to take all of it!
What would you do?

Leave the bowl out! We're doing the same thing and I've done it before in the past and no one took all the candy.

I'd leave it out.
We've left candy out (growing up when my mom would take us out to trick or treat so no one was there to answer the door). Sometimes we'd get back and there'd still be some candy left (other times not...) but that would have to mean people were only taking 1 or 2, right?
And I remember going to the left out candy bowl as a kid and only taking one candy so there'd be some left for others...I'd hope people would still do the same!

Eh, I would leave some out, but probably know that the first kids would take all of it (at least they do over here). It would make me feel better knowing I at least tried.

We are in the same boat and are leaving candy out in a bowl. I still have a small shred of faith that the first kids won't take it all!

I'd leave out a bowl too, even if one kid takes it all (which I doubt... maybe I'm just too Canadian?! lol!) then all the other folks know you tried. It's all about effort!

Leave a bowl and a kind note about taking one or two and leaving some for the next kids.

We don't leave anything out if we aren't home (and don't always pass anything out if we are - is that bad?!) I honestly never thought twice about it.

We've left a bowl out growing up before and eventually someone took it all. I doubt the little kids would but probably middle school or high schoolers! But they do tend to come later so hopefully at least some kids would get some before!
Eta I think we were only gone an hour!

I'd leave a bowl out! When I was a kid and people did that, I still only took one. And I don't think I was THAT much of a goody-two-shoes 
At least with the younger kids I'm sure their parents will make sure they only take their fair share (I hope!)

I would leave a bowl out with some candy and hope that everyone that comes has enough sense to only take one or maybe two.

Every year I leave a bowl out and every year I check on it after like 15 min (I just don't like sitting out usually, I'm lazy) and its all gone. So I know the first kids are taking it and it annoys me. This year we are going to sit out since I want to dress up LO.. but I think the future if I don't plan to personally hand out candy I won't put out a bowl.

I would leave it out. When I was a kid we were good about taking one (or two) from bowls with a note

We've left a bowl out before and I know that the first kids just take it all. So we're not turning our light on until we get home. There will still be some trick or treaters around. DH will be home so one of us can put the kids to bed and the other can hand out candy.

We left a bowl out while we went up the street with dd last year and we were gone for 10 minutes. It was all gone when we came home. I would just not turn the porch lights on. Unless you don't care if one kid takes it all!

We leave a bowl out since we'll be out. Our new house is at the end of a dead end though so I doubt anyone's even going to come by.

I left it out one year and a neighbor told me it was gone about 5 mins after I left
Now I just leave the light off and no candy

I left a bowl out last night when we went TOTing and most of it was still there when we got back. I'd say it depends on your neighborhood and whether kids are unaccompanied or not.

I'd leave a bowl with a note. I used to not feel that way but now that we have been through a few trick or treat evenings in our neighborhood, I know the little kids come first. They can get their candy. Maybe a bad kid will come along and take a lot but you won't know when you get back.

We encountered a number of bowls that had been left out and there was still a ton of candy. Made me happy to see that! However, we were out early with a lot of younger kids...might have been a different story later in the evening when the teenagers were out.

As I suspected we left the bowl out and came back to a full bowl! No trick or treaters

I left a note and we went for an hour and when I came back there was barely any taken! It was when I passed it out that kids grabbed fist fulls!

@fancyfunction: Wish I saw this before! When i was a teenager I watched a neighbours house to give out treats. Lots of my friends did. My mom knew I was safe, and they knew their candy was being handed out. Some parents won't let their kids take candy out of a bowl.
