We are fully intending to send our children to the local, well performing state school but the education-plans thread got me thinking.... what if the local school wasn't so good.....

There are two really good fee-paying schools in my City for academically gifted children. The kids have to sit an entrance examination and attend an interview and if they are accepted the parent can then look forward to paying £10,000 a year for tuition! Awesome!! The schools are fantastic, though, and both look a little like Hogwarts so it's worth the expense! They do offer scholarships for very, very exceptional children but it's very competitive.

Now.... we could just about afford to send a child to one of these schools, if tightened our belts to the max. It's cheaper than a full time daycare place, let's be honest! But there's no way we could afford to send two children.

So here's my question: If you could only afford to send one child to a fee paying school, would you? What if only one of your children was academically gifted - would you pay £10k a year for their education but send the other child to a state (public) school?

My mind is blown just thinking about this!
