Picture this; You are in an elevator and a older couple walks in, smiling at your adorable child (of course).
Then comes the "how old is she?" and when you respond she mumbles to her husband to "That is a giant baby"
Who says that?! I just said "Yes, yes she is tall like her daddy"
DD is 17 months and is 36.11 inches long, but skinny.
Could it be an optical illusion because I'm only 5'3"??

What is wrong with people? Even if your baby was a giant baby, or a super chubby baby, or a super tiny baby or anything else other than this woman's idea of normal, she needs to keep her comments inside of her head.

I really think people should never comment on a child's size, just like they should never comment anyone else's height or weight. It is so rude and makes me so mad. Our LO has always been in the 99th percentile for height. He is only around 25th for weight. But people constantly tell us how big he is. It upsets me so much because it always comes across negatively.

The other day, my grandma said she was going to buy LO an easter bonnet, "but you know, she has a big head, so..." -- Okay? I didn't even say anything in response.
When people comment on her size, I just smile. People are just weird. One day someone thinks she's tiny, and the next day someone says she's chubby. I think they're just feeling an internal need to say SOMETHING. It's awkward, but I do think they're trying to be nice.

Ugh, I get that about DD...she's now in the 95th percentile and 75th for weight. I don't mind when someone says she's tall but "big" seems negative. I especially don't like it now that she understands them.
On the other hand, DD2 is in the 14th percentile and people comment that she's skinny and petite, which makes me nervous because she spits up frequently so I feel like I'm starving her!
I wish people would keep those thoughts to themselves.

I think most people make those kinds of comments just because they are trying making small talk. I don't think it's particularly rude.

My DS has been 99 %ile for weight since about 18 mos old. 50% for height. We get a lot of comments on his size and it does get really old.

@lamariniere: I agree-- I'm 5'2" and C is pretty tall for her age; I don't take it personally at all. H was 10lb 12 oz when he was born, so I got the "giant baby" comment A LOT. Even a few, "How did he get out?!" comments. I laughed, because I sometimes wondered the same thing!
To be fair, 36 inches for a 17 month old IS giant-esque.

@HabesBabe: i was thinking the same thing! LO has always been tall 99th percentile til about 18 months and now she's about 80th, but she's 2 and not yet 36 inches!

I don't think the comment alone is really rude, the side mumbling it weird though.
Meanwhile C is 50% in height and I frequently get comments about "oh she must be tall!" Sometimes I just nod and smile and sometimes I tell them Nope, perfectly average. Meh.

i just don't get why people try to tell parents what they presumably are already aware of (big baby, small baby, etc.) or why they make comments that are blatantly wrong. Recently someone tell me my 35 inch, 27 pound 2 yr 8 month daughter was "huge". Um no.....
It's be so much nicer to say "she reminds me of my granddaughter" or "I remember having kids that age" or "cool shoes!" And leave it at that.

I think like some previous posters said, some people make comments like this just because they feel compelled to say SOMETHING, and they don't know what else to say. I swear half the time I get "wow, what a big boy!" and other times I get "oh he's just a little guy." It makes no sense.

@StrawberryShortie: she is adorable! I love the hat and shoes. I have the opposite problem. My ds is 12 months and only 18lbs 7oz and 28 3/4 long and people comment all the time how small he is which actually bothers me
