Argg we are going through this with my 18m old who started it at 16m. Nothing we do makes him stop. We just constantly redirect, "can you go bring me the broom?". He hits my dogs and bites, playfully but I really don't know how to stop it. I think it's just part of their development.
Are the twins playing when they're hitting? In that case I'd let it be because they're are learning the power and limitations of their physicality.

LO (15 mos) is a hitter and has been for a few months now. We don't use the word hit, rather we verbalize the immediate action we want him to do followed by how we want him to use his hands. "Stop." (& block the hit if you can). Then, we hold his hands and say "hands are for high fives" or "hands are for eating" or "gentle hands." Then, we demonstrate the action. This usually stops the hitting at the moment, but sometimes we have to put distance between ourselves.

The other day another child bit my son after mine gave him a few hits. Eventually he will learn. Daycare is so unconcerned because this is developmentally appropriate, but I'm horrified.

My son is still doing this at 20 months. We taught him gentle hands but now he just hits and then immediately follows it up with gentle touches as if that absolves the hitting offense I asked about it at his 18 month appt and the pediatrician assured us that it's developmental.

Yep. Ours were 2.5 months apart. The hitting was intense. Our younger one preferred hitting with objects, particularly any wooden toys she could find. So we basically packed away all of the hard toys they had for about 6 months! Now, at almost 21 months, it has improved dramatically. She still hits (and bites) some but her language is so much better that makes a big difference.

Yeah, my twins started hitting around 14 months. But I think it was related to some of the games I would play with them. Like I would pat their cheeks or pat my cheeks to make noises and they would try to mimic me, but it would look like hitting. Of course, I would laugh and they would continue doing it. After a little bit, that's when I would realize that this isn't the best idea.

As for the throwing of sippy cups. Yeah, my nearly 23 month old twins are throwing things now. I think it starts because I thow toy balls and stuff animals and they run after it and bring it back to me (haha, like a dog). So then they start throwing everything like sippy cups. Some of it is out of frustration, too. My twins do have a communication delay (therapy is starting soon), so we do have some tantrums which involve throwing whatever they have in their hands.

Oh, we do have two dogs so we are always saying to don't the dogs and showing them to be nice and pet the dogs softly. It works. Although, my son seem to pick up the gentle petting before my daughter. I think my daughter needed a few weeks to control her hand.
