B is 18 months and has a speech delay. It seems as though when he gets frustrated and cant tell us what's wrong- he resorts to hitting. ( it started off as biting- but I bit him back one day and he stopped) I am not really sure how to deal with this. At first he was just hitting me- and I would tell him "no hitting", "gentle hands", etc. But today as I was leaving dropping him off at daycare- he hit another little girl who was all up in his face.... Is it just an age thing? Is it because he cant verbalize what's wrong.... Help. How do I stop this behavior....

I don't have any advice, but I can sympathize. My LO is 20 months and delayed in his speech and is hitting and biting too.
He got so frustrated when he was trying to walk and couldn't and I think we're seeing that frustration again with the speech. -
do the daycare teachers or your pediatrician have any recommendations? from what i understand this is fairly common (but still sad and frustrating!) behavior, so you're not alone. i'm sure others will have some good advice as well.

What about introducing some signs? I don't know how your SLP would feel about that, but it could be an option.

@looch: We do have some signs (very basic ones) but they aren't really useful (at least the ones he knows) in this situation yet.
