How long would you let your 15 mo old cio at 4am? He often wakes around 4-4:30 and I have been holding him after that to sleep but it's no longer working. I need him to stay in crib but he's resistant to going to sleep alone at that hour. How long should I leave him or how should I respond?

I would completely ignore it and let him CIO.

@gotkimchi: we had this at that age and it was awful. We kept his bedtime nice and early like 715, and ignore him til about 530, lately 615!. Also, shockingly, I would tell him "Go to sleep, honey" through the monitor and somehow he lays right down and usually falls asleep. I think they do that at daycare.
But don't let him get up before 530 or so. It's too early. I learned the hard way. -
@pachamama: ugh I know it happened with my daughter and I handled it wrong because she was up early forever. I'm trying to avoid that again

@gotkimchi: Yeah I'd let it go until it's time to get up. If you can't do that, try letting it go for 15-20 minutes. There have been times when DD woke up and started crying and I'd turn off the monitor and fall back to sleep. I'd wake an hour or so later and turn it back on and see that she had settled down.
I've just learned with my kids that I don't really help them finback to sleep. All I do is distract them and keep them up.

@gotkimchi: Have you ruled out feeding him at the wakeup? If you do, maybe he'd sleep longer?
I know you're supposed to treat that wakeup like it's a wakeup from nighttime sleep, but I never could. I would intervene, by either holding or feeding.

@looch: When I get him I always offer milk - he'll take one sip and throw it and then just put his head down on me. He def just wants me to hold him/not be in his crib

We went through this with my daughter and it was brutal. She's 22 months now and she has really only started "sleeping in" 'til 6:30-7 in the last month. Before that we would ignore her until 6. 6 or after and one of us would go get her and be up for the day while the other person got to sleep.

I agree with ignoring her. Your child will learn that once she goes in her crib, she doesn't come out until morning (you should set a time up to 12 hours after her bedtime). It's important to continually enforce this message (unless sick or hurt of course). Better for her to learn this lesson before she can climb out herself!

I usually ignore my 19 month old and he falls back asleep eventually. I've ignored for more than an hour before.
