We have lovely Christmas stockings we have always hung as a focal part of our decorations but our LO is 16 months now and we just realized that this year the heavy mantel-top stocking holders we have used for years are basically toddler death traps!
Any toddler parents out there actually hang stockings? Or do you take a year or two off until the LO can be reasoned with not to yank them down?

Grain of salt because I have not been there done that myself, but my parents did not child-proof stuff to the hilt. My bro was has always been tall for his age and always got into things. However, my mom trained him, like she did me, that certain things and places were off limits. We never put away the iron spoke fireplace set, and never missed hanging the stockings on the mantle from the hard material molded angels.

We were going to use those kind of stocking holders this year but quickly realized how unsafe they were! We ended up putting a small nail in the underside of the mantel and bending it up to make a hook and so it was hidden.

This has never even crossed my mind. We have a fire place screen so I don't think she can get it to. She hasn't ever tried to grab them. This is her third Christmas.

We have clear hooks under ther the mantel that stay there. They are the stick on kind and have worked great for years. In fact, they came with the house and you can't see them at all.

We have mantle clips. They're sturdy but super light. You can find them on amazon. They work great and no worries about LO getting hurt.

I tied them to our bannister with string this year and his the string with garland.

I use those clear Command hooks (because we rent, so don't want to use nails if we can avoid it).

We use mantle clips. Founds them at target last year. They are lightweight. Had to get them after I realized the same thing!!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: This was my philosophy with my oldest and it worked really well. I suspect it's not going to work so well this year with his little brother though...we'll see.

Suprisingly, she's never tried to pull them down. I think because she knows not to go near the fireplace?
Are your stocking holders heavy enough that the stocking might just fall off without the holder? Maybe give it a try for a day to see, and take it down if your little one wants to pull on them?

We are skipping them my 15 month old would tear them down for sure and break the command hooks. He's freakishly tall and strong and is into everything right now.

First thing our 16mo old did when we put our heavy metal holders on the mantel with stocking was run over and start tugging. We both looked at each other and said "nope". Our stocking are going on the Xmas tree this year. I'm not sure who all these angel children are that obey rules and feel a sense of caution, but ours is not.

Command hooks. But we hang them on a half wall, since we don't actually have a mantle.

@stratosphere: We have these. Got them at Target and they're really lightweight. Though my two-year-old has never tried to tear down the stockings.

I put a small thumbtack into the mantle (hidden) then use clear fishing line to hang the stockings on them.
Dd has never tried to pull them down but if she did at least it wouldn't hurt her that way
