Anyone else depressed by the news

@ShootingStar: I read the same thing, and scared doesn't begin to describe how I feel.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: it definitely hurt my heart. We all know there are plenty of people out there who aren't "good", but to allow your hatred to rise to the point of taking lives... It's so beyond me. I just don't get it.

@ShootingStar: Yes I saw that article too. I really didnt want to read and hoped I could just dismiss it but it really disturbed me. At this point I just feel that anything is possible. I try to remain hopeful though, but its a challenge

Have you guys seen this? It feels so relevant these days, despite being from 1941...

I'm definitely saddened and depressed every time Trump does something. It's been only 10 days since he has been President. I'm terrified of what the future will look like.

I'm a republican and everything going on in depressing me. It's ridiculous and I am a little afraid for what's to come.

I am depressed and have been in denial still that T is the president. I've been avoiding the news. My husband is more on the "neutral" side and he said nowadays news is very biased, if you watch CNN or MSNBC and such, there is no way you can get facts without having the hosts and reporters expressing their emotion and steering the viewers to a certain emotion (anger/ resentment / frustration). Which I agree, and the media does make the whole situation worse than it already is. He said USA Today is more neutral so yesterday I am trying to read a bit ... and honestly that is the first time I am looking at news since Trump was elected president. Sigh.

What I want to know is, how do people who voted for Trump justify all of this, and how do they feel about it now.

I can't actually believe what is happening. A year ago I thought Trump was one hilarious joke. Then a realised it had the potential to be serious stuff but thought he couldn't possibly win. Then he won but I thought he couldn't possibly do the things he had promised. Ten days in and its worse than I could have ever imagined. He's governing by executive order, firing people who don't agree with him..... The people of the UK have been protesting all over the country, urging our government to make our stance clear - we do not support his racist, inhumane actions that directly breach human rights. We do not support the use of torture. Almost two million British people have signed a petition urging the government to cancel his official state visit. This notion has now been debated in our Parliament. We stand with you, friends

Last night, I saw something online about a three year old Syrian refugee and something in me just snapped. I sat on the sofa and cried. I feel so helpless.

@Cherrybee: I watched a little bit of that debate yesterday afternoon. I have to admit, even if the decision is to cancel the visit, the Trump team will spin it, just like they did with Mexico. And the supporters don't care, they are only looking inward at this point.

  11. Cherrybee

    papaya / 10570 posts

@looch: sure. And they have already made it clear that the offer has been extended and accepted so it won't be cancelled. But I think it's important for our Members of Parliament to voice loudly and publicly that we don't condone this stuff - because our Prime Minister seems content to be snapped holding hands with the twunt.

@ShootingStar: That is absolutely terrifying. I was planning on getting a passport anyway since my DL won't count for travel after this year, but now I feel like I need to do it even sooner.

@mrskansas: It's reassuring to me to know that some Republicans also recognize how abnormal-- and frightening-- this administration is. How are you dealing? Have you been in touch with your representatives?

  14. meredithNYC

    pomegranate / 3314 posts

@Cherrybee: Even though the Trump team will still do its usual spin, it makes me enormously happy to hear members of the UK government denouncing his actions so strongly. I think it DOES make a difference in the Mr. Trump is so ridiculously thin-skinned and longs for everyone to love him.

  15. mrskansas

    nectarine / 2813 posts

@meredithNYC: Well right now I am just laying low and seeing how things play out over the next few weeks. Everything that Trump is doing just seems so rash and poorly planned so I'm working on understanding what is actually happening vs what the media says.

  16. meredithNYC

    pomegranate / 3314 posts

@mrskansas: just know that your voice is important, too! I think for a lot of Republicans, his flagrant disregard for the Constitution is a huge issue, as it should be.

  17. ShootingStar

    coconut / 8472 posts

@mrskansas: Thank you for adding your voice here. I don't actually know very many republicans and I'm at a loss as to what they're thinking. I was prepared for a president whose ideals were opposite of my own. But I feel this is so much more than that - the checks and balances seem to be eroding.

  18. looch

    wonderful pear / 26210 posts

I am going to go out on a limb, but I think some Trump supporters aren't republicans. Just as some republicans aren't Trump supporters.

What concerns me the most is that there seem to be no checks and balances in place. This should concern all Americans.

  19. mrskansas

    nectarine / 2813 posts

@ShootingStar: Yes it is much more than just having a Republican president.
To be honest, I am at a loss. For most of the Republicans I know, who are highly educated, intelligent people, they were hoping that Trump would come in and 'calm down' and actually be a president - not typical Trump.
I have avoided talking politics lately but I may have to just to see where everyone is at.

@Cherrybee: I was reading about the victims last night http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/the-victims-six-men-who-sought-better-lives-in-quebec/article33835172/ and i was on the verge of breaking down. We actually took the kids to the vigil last night held in our city and it was heartwarming to see the large crowd and politicians there in support of the victims and Muslim community.

@Synchronicity: it makes me sooo mad that Trump used that shooting to defend his Muslim ban. Um no, this was done by a crazy alt-right Trump supporter who is emboldened by the words of the US president.

@looch: Yeah I am very confused about the lack of checks and balances. Its like he is breaking every rule in the book and there is no one to stop him. He rashly fired Sally Yates last night and the official statement was so whiney and unprofessional it sounded like something my 4 year would come up with whilst complaining about someone who wouldnt share their toys. Its also false because the DOJ didnt approve his ban

The immigration thing really hits home (not that the other things don't), but because my family & I are immigrants and I believe my dad still holds a green card and did not naturalize... So while our country is not on Trump's list (for now), the thought of him leaving for a business trip and now being allowed to come back is just straight out crazy.

I, too, have just been overloaded with news; baised, unbiased, along with alllllll the rainbows of opinions that come along with the news... I honestly don't even know what to think half the time. The only encouraging thing is hearing/reading about people that step up. Like lawyers that volunteer to help people at airports; people risking their jobs to defend what's right...

You guys. The Senate just approved Betsy DeVos and Rick Perry. I can't even with these Republicans. So f*cking spineless. I'm so angry!

@littlebug: i wonder what is the purpose of the hearings with elizabeth warren because she grills them so hard and its evident that they arent qualified but then they still get approved Betsy DeVos is especially clueless

I'm extremely apprehensive and on the edge. Every day it seems like I wake up to some new horror. I'm glad I don't physically live in the US, but everything that is happening still affects me and people around me.

    This is especially terrifying.

I have been absolutely horrified. I feel like it is especially important to stay informed and up to date with the news and what is actually happening, but it is really hard emotionally. I have donated extra money to NPR and subscribed to the NYT because I want to support news outlets that I feel are quality.

I find I feel better when I am actively involved. I have saved the numbers of my Senators and Representative to my phone and am working to make daily calls. I have also signed up with multiple sites that email daily or weekly actions to take. I am attending multiple protests and getting involved with local organizations that are actively fighting injustices that are occurring. It is just heartbreaking.

@lamariniere: Well, I was thinking where I would feel safer, in the US when the nukes fly or in Europe when Putin rolls his tanks across Europe?

I am convinced the only safe place left on the planet is Australia.

  34. Adira

@littlebug: Just to clarify, DeVos and Perry cleared the Senate committees. Now the entire Senate has to vote to confirm them.

  35. littlebug

@Adira: Yes, thanks for clarifying. What I read initially wasn't clear. I'm holding out hope that the full Senate will block their appointments, but I'm not terribly optimistic.

I think more disheartening than the news lately is the actual responses I see from people I grew up with and family members, when they post their thoughts on FB. I guess I didn't realize how racist and xenophobic so many people I know are and I've been pretty hurt by it all.

I have a cousin that posts pretty prolifically on FB and it's all really terrible stuff. And sometimes I get the energy and courage to speak up against it, but it's hard because his personal FB becomes a pileon from all his friends-and this is a 40-something year old man in ruralish Virginia. So his friends are all adults, parents, citizens...but their responses are usually just absolutely out and out chillingly evil.

He's posted about 3 times in the last 12 hours various rants all on the same theme: that immigrants/refugees (yes, he conflates the two) are secretly out to get us, that they want to come here and not work and just take from American's social services, that they want to come here and make the US live under sharia law. Just basically every ridiculous thing ever said.

I had a girl I went to HS with claim that these refugees would rape and burn houses down if people here tried to help them. I'm not making this stuff up. Every single one of these people are parents. So they are raising kids to believe this stuff. THAT is what's getting me down. How can we be from the same family? How did I grow up with those people and end up so different?

  38. Mrsbells

    squash / 13199 posts

@Anagram: yes for me this is the hardest sadest part is realizing that people I thought I knew and loved are racist, islamophobic and xenophobic. its very very sad. Many of my friends doing this are proudly christian (like me) but now i realize they only use that chrisitanity to preach down to others about abortions and homosexuality. their christianity doesnt extend to compassion for people who need help

  39. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@littlebug: I'm not optimistic either. Hopefully there are three Republicans with a conscience who will vote against her...
