I feel tired of being angry all the time about the next nonsensical thing that Trump has done. I have started actually avoiding the news but I didnt get far because on saturday i started getting lots of panicked texts about the issue at the airport from friends who have family that are green card holders currently outside the US. As a very active christian I am also increasingly disgusted my christian friends who are very comfortable with the hateful rhetoric of this administration, forgetting that Jesus himself was an uneducated, poor, middle eastern man who was also a refugee in egypt at one point

i could handle trump- just another narcissist motivated exclusively by his own self interest. Bannon terrifies me- I think he truly is a sociopath and wants to see chaos and genocide. and he is obviously pretty skilled at buttering up our commander in chief.I was really doing okay until this weekend.

It's definitely hard.
I mean, nothing Trump has done surprises me. This is all very classic Trump and he's definitely keeping to his campaign promises.
But it's depressing. Especially as Republicans who used to stand up to him when he was just a candidate now are falling in line behind him singing his praises for these horrific actions.

@Mrsbells: it really is breaking my heart to read the news and I do find myself avoiding it for that reason... but I will say that many of my Christian friends (I grew up evangelical) have surprised me and been responding in love. Many are posting how Jesus' greatest commandment is love others, and posting the Bible verses about compassion, feeding the hungry, clothing the poor and giving shelter to homeless. I've seen many DOING something like volunteering at the refugee centers, calling local representatives, and there was just a rally in my state that was anti Muslim ban- led by our Muslim district representative. So it has been refreshing.

I am a legal immigrant from India. Recent actions and political developments have me and my DH questioning our decision to stay in this country. People who are taking these decision don't understand the pain of leaving your motherland and family. We are revaluating our future plans to stay here. But right now it feels like though we pay all our taxes and oblige with all laws of land we will never be treated equal. My dd is a US citizen, but i fear that she will have to undergo discrimination at school, college.

@Jass: Neither my husband nor I were born here although we are both citizens now. Can I just say that I can fully understand how you feel but please note you belong here just as much as the next person. It breaks my heart that so many people like you including myself are questioning whether they really do belong or not -

I'm beyond angry and depressed at the news. It scares me. Trump might just end up impeached and then who do we have? Good ole Pencey boy. Blech.

I wouldn't say depressed--horrified, definitely. But I'm also so inspired by how massive the protests have been, and especially by the heroic work of lawyers, including some I know personally working pro bono on the ground at airports. I'm an optimist so I just can't imagine this is going to stand...

@Adira: I think that's one of the hardest things for me - all the congressmen who denounced his campaign rhetoric but are now going about business as usual, as though any of this is ok. Paul Ryan in particular I'd like to punch in his smug little face.
@Bibliolove: Pence makes me nervous from a women's rights perspective, but I don't think I'd fear for the safety of our country under him. While his mindset is stuck in the stone ages, at least he's not Twitter-trigger-happy and I would not be afraid that he's launching us into WWIII.
I have real fear that ISIS will launch a major attack on US soil because of Trump's blatant disregard for reality.

yeah its sad to see that people just jumped on board even though they initially vowed not to work with him. Many people I know who voted for trump said they were confident that all his campaign promises were just to get votes and that there wer enough checks in place to prevent him from actually carrying them out but clearly they were wrong.

@Mrsbells: Thanks. My husband and me are Sikh, so he wears a turban and people often confuse him for a Muslim. This makes things more complicated and uncomfortable for us.

I'm definitely depressed by the news and i'm not even in the US. I'm trying to channel the anger and frustration to more productive acts - DH and i have decided to be part of an endeavour to sponsor a Syrian family to our city.

@Bibliolove: I would actually welcome Pence right now! Sure I disagree with almost everything he stands for, but I don't think he would be sowing chaos or needlessly provoking other countries because of his neediness and incompetence.

What is going on is absolutely surreal. I feel like when Obama used executive orders it was because Congress flat out refused to work with him and his actions did not target groups and make life harder for people. Trump has a Republican Congress, but rather govern by decree. The orders don't make sense. I wish someone with a legal background and political experience would help him. There is so much confusion.
We are personally affected by one of Trump's executive orders. Every night I pray for our country.
@Mrsbells: I remember his campaign aides on cable news after he was elected saying the people who voted for him didn't take his rhetoric literally and the problem was the media did. Well what else do we have to go on? And wouldn't you know it- he literally meant what he said!

@Jass: yes ignorance is the biggest propeller for hate and exclusion. Not sure where you live but i know that some cities/towns/states are much more inclusive than others

@Jass: IMHO staying in the US is not worth it unless you have a really good reason. It's not all it's cracked up to be even without Trump, and with Trump, who knows what's next. I'm quietly hoping most of my immigrant friends will choose to leave. They'll be safer that way, and for many of them, they won't be any poorer - this country just sucks the middle class dry and spits it out.

Yeah it makes no sense why he is not using the house and senate but rather running as dictator. Bernie sanders just shared on facebook a post on kellyann conway saying the media who talk smack about trump should be fired. He is establishing himself as a lawless dictator that wants to suppress the truth and disregard the constitution and peoples rights. its terrifying -
I feel like we're all being set up to lose. It feels like an effort to turn us into an uneducated, sick, poor country and this I can not let happen.
The thing is that this kind of stuff affects everyone, not just who won and who lost. It doesn't work that way.

I'm apparently in a happy little bubble in terms of my Facebook friends, because literally everyone is appalled by what's going on. So I was thinking, "Well, this can't stand for long, NO ONE is in favor!" And then I read comments on an article about it...And...wow. I had to stop because it's making me so angry. It's shocking how uneducated and unsympathetic so many people in this country are.
They are so easily convinced by lies and misinformation, proudly spouting things that are patently false as if it's the gospel truth. Yeesh.

@Mama Bird: no country is perfect. Every country has its own sets of problems. We are not in states for money. My DH's family is really well off money wise back home . He doesn't have that much challenging work opportunities back home.

@Mama Bird: I definitely understand what you mean but a part of me feels like that would be a win for Trump if people leave. I used to have similar questions about the civil rights era when black people would deliberately go to a "Whites only restaurant" I thought why bother going there if they clearly dont want your business, but I get it now. Its about having the right to choose where to live rather than letting someone run you out.

@Mama Bird: What is your really good reason for staying the United States? Which country are you thinking about moving to? I'm staying in the US because I actually love it here. The only other country I would go to is Australia, but its actually really tough to move there. Do you know which countries are easy to move to?

@agold: my really good reason is an elderly family member who will not leave. I'm not form here originally and I'd have moved back home years ago otherwise. This is just the last drop. My home country is not very safe and it's not very rich, but it's home. Maybe it's also that I'm stuck in my least favorite place in the US, but I've wanted out for years. Don't know where else is easy to move to, but I think Canada and Australia are possibilities for people in certain professions - they have a list of in demand jobs. And Australia is pretty cool
Part of me feels very protective of friends and co-workers that are being affected by this, and I want to stay and fight for them. But part of me just wants to say, you wanted this guy, so you can have him, but you can't have me or my tax dollars! Especially since my entire community conveniently forgot they were refugees 20 years ago and voted Trump. I just don't want to live anywhere near these people ever again.

Many of my students are *very* recent refugee students and all I can do is show them that they matter, that I want them here, and to not let the beliefs of some tarnish their views of many. It makes me sick because they are children who have been through a world of hurt that I cannot fathom.

This is all so disturbing. My DH & I were born here, but even we don't know that we want to stay. On the other hand I feel like we need to fight like hell to get our country back on track. The rapid-fire speed of his ridiculous executive actions is what terrifies me most--what is the real doozy he's going to sneak through while everyone is in panic mode?!

I feel like my anxiety and anger about him is creeping into my everyday life, so I'm just more on edge all the time before the normal everyday stressors kick in. And it's so much worse than I expected- I thought we had enough checks and balances in place.
@MrsSCB: sort of the same here- I live in a very blue state, and most of my Facebook feed is anti trump. There arelike 5 "friends" who post anythign pro trump. So it's just so hard to wrap my head around people who would support this.

There's a Twitter account called @Trump_Regrets that retweets people who tweet about regretting voting for Trump. It did make me feel slightly better reading through it and seeing how not everyone still supports him. Just wish they'd come to that realization in November

I can't stop reading the news, but I'm anxious and crying every day. There was an article making the rounds today about this being a test run for a coup d'etat, and it linked an earlier article from the same author. It has been written pre inauguration and the guy essentially predicted what's happening with visa ban. He postulated Trump is running on a similar timeline to hitler, just slightly faster. He was basically saying if you're part of certain minorities (including Jews) then now is the time to get out.
I am half Jewish and the thought of being forced to leave this country or die seems insane and yet terrifies me. It seems so preposterous, yet every day I keep thinking this can't be real life. They're going to chip away at our society little by little, gaslighting us all.

Hearing the news from the states has been equal parts depressing and terrifying (I'm Canadian). We had a shooting yesterday in Quebec City in a mosque, where 6 people were fatally gunned down during evening prayers and 5 more critically injured. A suspect was arrested - a white male, apparently right-wing, university student. He is being reported as having nationalist and Trump-supporting beliefs. Horrifying. The world does not seem like a good place right now. It's hard sometimes to see the light.

It's caused me a ton of anxiety over the past year, but I feel like I am finally getting to the point where I can accept what is happening. Not as in acquiesce or condone, but radical acceptance in the sense that Tara Brach writes about in her book Radical Acceptance. That I can acknowledge that really bad things will happen without feeling overcome by tension or paralyzed by fear. It's a really amazing book actually (I'm not Buddhist but still learned a lot), the author starts her journey towards radical acceptance with pregnancy loss, which I know is something many here can relate to.
Like others, I'm also inspired by the political engagement that we've seen.

It's causing me so much anxiety and I'm not usually an anxious person! But a lot of people I care about are being directly affected by many of the EOs. I wish I could just tune everything out and go about my life, but NOT knowing and keeping up to date with what is happening causes me even more anxiety.

@periwinklebee: one thing I've really llatched onto is the quote "we are never asked to accept the things we would otherwise condone.". I think this speaks to the true heart of acceptance....It requires a change in expectations at the fundamental level.
I actually feel better this week. I have been in a funk since the election. But seeing the alt science Twitters reminded me I'm not alone..
And then the tide seems to be turning a little this week. People are starting to wake up.I also wanted to say...Outrage and excessive emotion are like food for the opposition. I think the more we can get to a state of calm resistance where we can resist without alienating, the better we will do long term. But it takes time.
