Anyone else depressed by the news

@Anagram: Yes, I feel the same way. I lived in my little bubble, thinking people felt the same as I did, boy was I surprised when the lid was blown off that.

How are you feeling about DeVos?

@lamariniere: And add on top of that the wave of populism/swing to the far right that's happening in Europe, and you're in basically the same situation as what's happening in the US, well...almost. You won't lose your nationalized health care!

I haven't had a chance to read all the posts on this thread, but I've been feeling really helpless, too, so I'm taking an idea of a Facebook friend and we're hosting a postcard writing party this weekend. We'll write postcards thanking legislators and others for resisting and write to others to ask them to block appointments, etc. Who knows if it will help, but at least I'll feel like we did something.

@sunny: I think that's attributing a little too much intelligence and omniscience to Trump and his team. He may be testing the waters, but the outcome might not be one he likes. But it's really a toss up what will happen, too many things up in the air. And I'm sure if things really go pear shaped, he'll just jump into a private jet and never be seen again while the country suffers the consequences.

@looch: at least there's that! But I am very nervous about the upcoming elections this year. I've been so consumed with US politics that I've barely paid attention to what's going on.

@Mrsbells: amen to everything you just said. My entire family is super Christian. But yeah, you would never know it by what they are posting. I mean, there are a couple who are very vocal about their terrible beliefs and I don't want to lump the rest of my Christian family in with them....but the rest also haven't said anything against those vocal family members, so it's kind of a situation where if they haven't disagreed, then it seems to me they agree with all the hateful rhetoric.

@Mrsbells: I write press releases for a living and I would be fired if I wrote something as unprofessional as this. Not to mention the embarrassment of something like this going out with my name on it.

@Anagram: yes thats how I feel too, some people just shrug and say they dont care about the situation because it doesnt personally affect them yet. Some of them I know are actually happy at the recent happenings but not brave enough to say it

I still can't wrap my head around it. This is actually happening. It's like a bad dream that keeps getting worse. It's more than being depressed. I'm angry and anxious and frustrated. Why is it so hard to be decent? Why won't the people that can actually do something stand up to the madness?

@Baby Boy Mom: yeah its very unfortunate. on my facebook i've seen alot of people saying that if we wouldnt go out and bring a homeless person into our home and feed and house them for free then we cant ask them to release detainees at the airport. The logic is so flawed in many ways especially since all the people impacted have already been through the visa/green card application process and there is a lot of vetting done before you can get a US work or residency visa

Also no one is thinking about how frustrating this is for people from those countries who are here. We are creating a ticking time bomb by continously treating muslims here as if they dont belong. Thats what terrorist groups use in their recruitment propaganda

The Gorsuch pick is really depressing me this morning. Not that it was unexpected but just the hypocrisy of it all, the permanency of this pick and now the terror that one of the liberal justices will need to be replaced during his term. It's too much for me today.

@Baby Boy Mom: Where are the moderates? That's what I want to know. I don't want a liberal, I don't want a conservative, I want the moderates, that can see both sides to step up.

The markets are reacting, there's way too much uncertainty now.

@petitenoisette: Yeah its hard. I try not to look at things sometimes then I try not react to them but its nearly impossible at this rate. I feel like he genuinely is turning into a dictator especially with suppressing CNN now and the kellyanns comments about how people who "talked smack" about him during the election should be fired. Its his way or the highway

I can definitely feel the strain mentally and emotionally. Honestly, I've felt better since I started being more active by calling my representatives frequently and attending protests/events/rallys. It feels better to just DO something. But then I know I have to be careful not to overextend myself. I'm also trying to be concious of keeping up with my self care and spending quality time with my husband and kid. I'm trying to stay off facebook while I'm home with my son in the evenings and bring him with me to events.

@looch: I think the moderates are watching and waiting. If you read a conservative news source, the coverage is pretty different and makes it look like the administration is actually doing some fairly sane stuff with some hiccups. And I can see their point of view... IMHO Bush and Obama also did some really awful stuff that people should have been howling about and protesting in the streets, but somehow they just didn't cause this level of outrage. I guess the thinking is, this could be no worse? I wonder though if they have any line in their mind that Trump should not cross. And what that line is. I've seen someone ask this exact question on another site, and they got zero coherent answers.

@Mama Bird: yeah, the coverage couldn't be more different.

Look at the "headlines" running on each page right now.

You have Fox News with 3-4 articles essentially catering to the Christian Right, right in the headlines. Whipping up hysteria about Christians being persecuted in other countries (that's to garner support for the muslim ban, even though they keep insisting it's not a muslim ban), BIG headline about Trump "defending Religious Freedom", headlines asking if Democratic Party is "in trouble", negative new about Iran (to further garner support for a ban against all Iranian nationals), etc. etc.

On MSNBC, you've got a main headline saying Dems are Forcing the GOP to fix a broken system, a whole tab set up to showcase "Aleppo's Children", smaller headings about Trump's Black History Month snafu yesterday and about Planned Parenthood's popularity.

They couldn't be more different. And if anyone is getting their news from just 1 of those sources.....oh boy are they blinded.

@looch: I don't know, but they need to grow some cojones and step up.

ETA: The conflicts of interest are just outrageous on so many levels. I think you mentioned upthread. Beyond disagreeing with "policy" the moral/ethical conflicts need to be addressed.
