@hilsy85: That sounds intense! Is it free preschool?

We looked into preschool but are doing another year of a nanny share and going to have her start at preschool next fall. But in our neighborhood we won't really have a problem enrolling, it seems. When we were going to do this for this fall, a few places had a number of spots open. I'm more worried about Universal Pre-K when she's 4.

@hilsy85: J is starting preschool in a few weeks! We decided to go nuts and put him in a program for this year. You're wise to postpone the madness for a year!

Where are you located? I'm in Long Island and have no idea about any of this!!

I should add that it's an urban thing, but not definitely not exclusive to NYC as we are in Hong Kong and getting school places starting with playgroups for 10 month olds is fiercely competitive. I feel your pain....and now I'm wondering if we may be out of luck not only for the rest of this school year but also for the threes programs next year. There's no way I can look now since I don't know what neighborhood I'll be living in, and won't until Oct/Nov. Eek!

I put LO on the waiting list in March for September 2015. I have a meeting set up with the director in 3 weeks because I found out that it isn't first come first serve.

We moved states and I've had my LO on the wait list for the preschool we like since Nov 2013 to try to get in for Aug 2015. Ours will be about $1200 a month including after care. We currently pay about $800 a month for full time daycare. But I hear all the time from parents of kids who go to the preschool that their kids could read and do lots of advanced things before they went to kindergarten. So I decided it was worth it.

The school is first come, first served and they give priority to siblings of previous students. Which sucks because we may not get in just because someone else rolls in with "lineage" that we don't have yet. But hopefully we'll get in if not for fall of 2015, then for the 2016 class, and then our LO#2 will have be a cakewalk to get in.

We just got our 2 year old in a super nice montessori luckily last minute somehow! I may keep her there until I ca get her in a 4s program at a school I really want here in Brooklyn. So while I may not apply this year, I'm definitely going on some open houses.

@hilsy85: I never really thought I'd be THAT mom who did stuff like wait list her kid for a fancy preschool before she even turned 1. I was in daycare until the day I started kindergarten, and that was totally fine. Sometimes I wonder if I'm being ridiculous, but I decided at the end of the day, I want to give her the best shot I can. And this school, which is the preschool feed for a prestigious private school, is definitely the best...Hence the crazy wait list. We moved to a city that has very high cost of living/property value, but amazing public schools. So we decided to pay more for our home to live here, and that we are basically investing the money that we would have to pay for private school elsewhere into our home and LO can go to these public schools while we live in a great area. So I'm THAT mom until she starts her public kindergarten, I guess:) (blushes)

@hilsy85: wow, I'm so impressed! I am trying to get my act together to do something for next year but I'll probablty just wait until pre-k. I can't take the stress and I have so much research to do.
