I gift at birthdays and Christmas because I don't gift liberally at other times of the year. We do a rewards system and they have to earn their new toys throughout the year.

I do their big gifts for bday/Christmas: bikes, scooters, dollhouse, etc.

@mrsjyw: then that makes sense if they already have stuff to open. We don't buy much for her throughout the year, $10 item here and there.

So far we have mostly done smaller things- I give all my bigger ideas to the grandparents, and like you, we buy stuff as she needs t throughout the year. She's so young that she gets easily overwhelmed opening gifts from relatives already.

So yeah, we get her some smaller things but no big gifts from us usually. When she is more aware I'm sure that will evolve.

However, every time I try to remind her who gave her something she just says "mommy and daddy got it for me!" So I guess we are getting all the credit anyway.

@hilsy85: I am off work the week of Christmas but we are going to send her to day care so we can have a date and stuff around the house. The first day is cleaning out the playroom to make room for new stuff. We still have toys out that she has outgrown that she never plays with.

We aren't doing big gifts, because I also buy smaller gifts frequently throughout the year, whether it's books, stickers, clothes, and she gets tons of presents for her birthday from friends anyways. Her birthday party alone was super expensive (to us) so I thought that was special enough, I mean she is only 3. And we probably won't get her a Christmas present now as we saved some gifts for her to open for Christmas. I am trying not to spoil her but I think I'm already failing at that!!
