I'm not too worried, but I answered yes because I'll definitely be using the real Off this year and not my usually hippie bug spray.

Worried. Want to ttc this summer-ish. Live in New England.

I'm not worried about it making it to my area. It's so completely out of my control, I can't add that to my stress level!

Slightly worried! We are trying to book a trip, and also planning on TTC later this year... I'm just feeling uncertain at this point.

ETA: I read that we don't have the main culprit mosquito species here in Canada, so I'm not at all worried about local spread.

Not worried about myself, baby due before mosquitos are in my area.

Not about myself right now... Apparently it won't come to Canada.

But it can last in you for years and effect future pregnancies. So it makes me not want to travel at all in child bearing years.

Also makes me nervous and upset for everyone that is being affected by this. So sad.

I'm not pregnant but the idea of it is definitely freaky.

If I were pregnant right now I would be scared. I have a couple friends who are expecting and they are worried. I get nervous thinking about how much it will have spread by the time I hopefully get pregnant again next year.

I am hoping to be pregnant this summer and we spray for mosquitos but I still always get bit so it does scare me.

It makes me sick to think about. After losing a baby to a severe brain birth defect, I can barely stand even thinking about what these women are going through. And we do probably want another baby, and live in a mosquito ridden area (though I'm not sure about the particular species). I'm also not allergic to mosquitos, so I've never needed to pay attention to them. I wouldn't even know if I were bitten, since I wouldn't have a bump.

@tlcbaby: same. I think we will take mosquito prevention a little more seriously this year. I've been trying to get a little more hippie with our lawn care but will probably pay someone to come spray our backyard this year. I'm more afraid of our kids getting bit.

We may or may not be TTC-Ing this summer. I just can't worry about it right now based off internet reading. If we decide to, I'll sit down with my OB since mosquitos do love me.

@Smurfette: who do you hire to spray for mosquitos? Is it more a lawn care company?

Yeah, I'm a little worried. We've had a number of cases here, though they were acquired elsewhere. But mosquitoes loooove me, so I'm afraid of the possibility of it becoming endemic to this area... As far as I know, though, the microcephaly cases have all been in people who acquired it in Brazil. I haven't heard of an increase in other countries. Not sure what that means, maybe other factors contribute? Or maybe it just hasn't been in other countries long enough to see a trend. It's scary how little we know at this point!

@Applesandbananas: I am 99x more afraid of getting Listeria from deli meat than getting Zika--and I am one to get 100 mosquito bites in a night. There is only so much we can worry about.

@Mrs. Champagne: According to the CDC, Zika virus usually remains in the blood of an infected person for only a few days to a week. The virus will not cause infections in an infant that is conceived after the virus is cleared from the blood. There is currently no evidence that Zika virus infection poses a risk of birth defects in future pregnancies.

@T.H.O.U.: I think because if an infected person comes back with it and a mosquito bites them, then that mosquito will then carry the virus.

I can't decide if I'm worried about it yet! It's horrific and so sad and my heart goes out to everyone who is affected by it.

I voted no, not planning to become pregnant. I do plan to become pregnant again in a few years. And if I was TTC now, I would totally be worried. But since I've got some time, I'm not worried about it.

@T.H.O.U.: right. And I think it has to be a certain type of mosquito? I think the media needs to chill and stop scaring people. Yes, it's real and awful, but it's not in the US yet (right?)

ETA... I think they need to put out the warnings about traveling to other countries, but it's seriously on the news every single second around me. I'm in Boston and it's cold, so there are no mosquitos!

@T.H.O.U.: the type of mosquito only travels about 500m in its lifetime (so I've read, ha) so the way it would spread is if an infected person comes to the U.S., is bitten by a mosquito while infected, and then that same mosquito bites someone else. Or, they also suspect it could be sexually transmitted
