I was talking to a friend of mine who is black and her husband is white. Their adorable little boy is darker than me. She's sad that her son will likely grow up self-identifying as black although he is half-white. I thought it would be pretty normal and understood that in America if you are a) partly black, b) look black then society will treat you as such therefore how you are perceived is likely how you will live/ identify. Not to say a mixed race child will shun one part of the family, but it's like Halle Berry- a black woman with a white mom.
